Multiple Citation Formating

I am using the IEEE style and when I use multiple citations they come up as [1]-[3] rather than [1-3]. I have been google searching for a while and it would seem that other people get the correct format and I can't seem to find a solution or a quick fix. Any help is appreciated. I have been ignoring this problem for many years now (because to be honest I don't personally care), but reviewers keep pointing it out and it is time that I permanently fix the problem.

  • [1]-[3] is correct in IEEE style, check page 34 of the IEEE's style manual: http://www.ieee.org/documents/style_manual.pdf

All other numeric styles that I'm aware of do [1-3] and so does Zotero/CSL for those styles.
  • Well then my apologies. Any recommendations for a commonly used or generic numeric style that is accepted by most engineering journals? Specifically mechanical engineering?
  • not really. IEEE would really be the top choice here, I don't know why reviewers complain about that (probably out of ignorance, though).

Vancouver is quite common, but it's really situated in medicine and the bio-sciences.

What would a couple of key journals be?
  • Generally anything by Elsevier or Springer, they usually aren't very picky, but I wouldn't mind sticking to one style as much as possible.

Also for student thesis' as there is no commonly used style around here.

Ignorance is always a big problem.

I will check out the Vancouver style. Thanks!
  • Hmmm the Vancouver style uses round brackets rather than square ones. That looks weird to me...
  • oh, we actually have standard numeric styles for both of those publishers:
    https://www.zotero.org/styles?q=Springer%20Basic%20%28numeric%2C%20brackets%29
    and
    https://www.zotero.org/styles?q=Elsevier%20%28numeric%2C%20with%20titles%29

I'm a strong advocate of using association standards, i.e. IEEE, for student work.
  • (there are a large number of Vancouver variants available on zotero.org/styles, including several superscript and square bracket versions)
  • Great thanks for your help!
  • Hi everyone,
Today I encountered the issue mentioned by the topic owner. My organization requires writing reports in IEEE style, but in the format [1-4] instead of [1]-[4]. I want to modify it to be like that but don't know how. Or if you know of a style based on IEEE that follows this format, I would greatly appreciate it.
