Bookmarklet + iPad (Safari) + Amazon

I tried out the Bookmarklet in Safari on an iPad today. It called home and got a translator for the page, but it failed with the "known issue" error message in the popup box in the lower-right corner of the page:

http://www.amazon.com/Economic-Analysis-Law-Aspen-Casebooks/dp/0735594422/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1362015579&sr=1-1&keywords=posner+economics

In Zotero (MLZ) translating from the page works correctly.

Is there a way to get debugging information from Safari? I am new to these devices.
  • For what it's worth, grabbing from Google Chrome (with MLZ set to offer connector support) also works.
  • Google Chrome after stopping Firefox also works on that URL.
  • that doesn't seem to work on the server.
    Try this for testing:
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8692918?dopt=Abstract
  • I don't have wireless access for the iPad at work (yet), but I'll give it a go at home later today. (Do you mean that Amazon is not working generally on the server, or that that particular URL fails?)
  • I don't know. Amazon is marked compatible on the server, but at least that URL didn't work for me using the bookmarklet from Firefox. The Pubmed one does.
  • It seems like it's saving the item for me, but for some reason the item isn't making its way back to the bookmarklet, so the bookmarklet throws an error even though translation was successful. We'll look into it.
  • My fault. (This broke with the new API code.) Should be working again now.
  • Fast forward to two years later and I am having the same issue: attempting to save Amazon pages via bookmarklet on the iPad fails. Maybe it is related to the release of the latest API?
  • do other sites work? E.g. the standard example we use at
    http://www.worldcat.org/title/wealth-of-nations-books-i-iii/oclc/8424650&referer=brief_results
It's possible Amazon is just broken for the bookmarklet for technical reasons (they revoked Zotero's access to _their_ API a while ago) that may not be possible to repair.
  • Yes, saving that WorldCat link works.

It would be a bummer if Amazon was permanently broken - it is one of the sites I use the most.

Anything I can do to debug the problem?
