Different types of notes?

I use zotero 4.0.26 in Mozilla Firefox 35.0.1. Looking at the center pane in my zotero gui, I have the title, creator, year and notes displayed for each of my library items. My question: why would an item have "1" in the notes column if I haven't added a note to the item? In other words, for some items zotero reads "0 notes:" under the "Notes" tab in the right pane, but there is a "1" listed in that item's note column in the center pane. I'd like to use notes to keep track of which items I've read, which means that I'd like to only see notes that I've added in the notes column, if possible. Any ideas?
