"retrieve metadata for PDF" option not showing?

I was teaching a Zotero session tonight. Two users, both Windows computers using Standalone, could not get the "Retrieve metadata for PDF" option to show when right-clicking a PDF item. Both users had installed the PDF indexer, checked for updates, reinstalled, restarted Zotero... no luck. Both Zotero installs were brand-new as of this evening. When I got back to my desk after the class, I could not recreate this behavior - the option is always there for me. Am I missing something? thanks so much for the collective wisdom.

    actually, now that I think about it, I wonder if they were trying this with PDFs that were children objects of citations already on their system? I'm betting that's it. Sometimes users don't see the little arrow / plus signs to see what is related and what not. Sorry!

    Yeah, that was almost certainly it. There's been talk of allowing that on child items, with the ability to update or merge with the parent's metadata, but no definite plans, and it gets a little complicated.
