Automatic updating of .csl files not hosted at the repository

I'm working with colleagues to tweak a Harvard style to accommodate our organization's own house style. While we're in this development/trial and error phase, is there a way of hosting the file on my own webspace, putting the address in the <link> field and getting Zotero to automatically download the updates so that I don't have to keep emailing the file and informing colleagues to update the style?

Looking at the information about the <link> field here http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/11946/style-error-mla/ I've experimented by changing the URL to the place where I've hosted it but when I look at the date in the Zotero preferences pane, it clearly hasn't picked up the new file. Any suggestions, or is this only something that can be done when it's hosted at the Zotero repository?
  • I don't believe that the Zotero updates system handles styles that are not hosted at Zotero.org. This is probably for security reasons.

It's not unreasonable to post even an imperfect style to the Zotero repository, and you could even request SVN access and update the file yourself. Plenty of styles go through many revisions, even after being posted to the repository.
  • afaik Zotero currently doesn't automatically update dev styles from the repository either.
  • Well... It still might be easier than emailing the files each time. So it looks like there might not be a good solution at this time.
  • Thanks for the helpful replies - it would be nice if there was an automated solution, but I was more concerned to know if it *should* have worked, in case I would have needed to look at the code again.

By accident, I've noticed that having uploaded a new version to my server, when I go to the URL for the file, Firefox automatically asks me if I'd like to update my style with the newer version from the server - which is half-automated and will save people from having to manually deal with attached files on emails for the time being.
  • afaik Zotero currently doesn't automatically update dev styles from the repository either.
Correct, though we're hoping to address this in the relatively near future. Not sure if the solution would apply to styles hosted elsewhere (at least initially—that will happen eventually, but possibly through a different mechanism).
  • Automatic updating of styles not hosted in the repository still has not been implemented, correct?
  • correct. Not aware of any activity in that respect, either. As you know, all repo styles are now update, though.
