Feel free to add it, the documentation is a wiki. All you need is a zotero wiki account, http://www.zotero.org/support/?do=login . Once you're logged in, just click on the "Edit this page" link in the right column.

Dan, what are your thoughts on implementing something similar in Zotero itself? Should there be a ticket (I couldn't find one)? Should control lie in the Zotero action menu, the preferences, or the word processor plugin settings? (to cover Quick Copy, the preferences might make most sense)

We have https://github.com/citation-style-language/locales/blob/master/locales.json, so it should be relatively straight-forward to offer a list of language names to users instead of locale codes (although we might want to localize the language names).

Probably Cite preferences for global.

For localizing, English versions of the locales won't do. We'd either need localized versions of all language names or just have each language name be rendered in that language (e.g., Wikipedia's front page). I'm fine with the latter. Would you ever be using a locale where you didn't at least know how to say the language name in the language itself?

Would it suffice to offer drop-down selections for the locales we have CSL locale files for (about 50)? We could have a custom option that allows users to put in a locale code instead.

I think this would be the way to go. Drop-downs are simple for users to use (they don't have to know language codes) and they're "guaranteed" to work. Putting in a language code and then getting some other locale because the one user wants specifically is not supported can be confusing.

A simple drop-down list seems not always to be handy, e.g. javimat has AFAIK to switch often between Spanish, Catalan and maybe a third language. If you have to scroll between these languages often, this seems not very user friendly. How about some (sticky) top 5 languages? I think for the "create new item" (green plus icon), there is also some logic to automatically update the top 5 entries depending on the user choices. And the character encoding in some exporting menues is AFAIK a drop-down list with sticky top entries.

I agree with zuphilip that the "Create New Item" dialogue structure with the five most recent languages and a "More" option with an alphabetical list would be better. I typically work in 4 languages that are located at far points in the list of 50. I imagine most users are probably similarly limited to just a few languages in common use.

Any suggestions on how to best store both the English and language-specific language names in JSON for https://github.com/citation-style-language/locales/blob/master/locales.json ?

I could just do

"nl-NL": ["Dutch", "Nederlands"]

or the more complex

"nl-NL": [{"en":"Dutch"}, {"nl-NL":"Nederlands"}]

Well, we use English names in our CSL style titles, so it's good to have them stored somewhere.
