can't copy to top collection in list

This hopefully has a simple answer. I am click-and-dragging to copy an item from one collection to another. I want to copy it to the very first collection in my list, but the green + sign disappears above the second collection. I get no highlight, no green + sign, nothing above the second collection in the list. Help?

    you don't mean "My Library," though, right? Because that's not a collection and the item is in there anyway.
    And you're positive the item isn't in the collection to which you're trying to copy it?

    Which OS, which Zotero version?

    No, not My Library, I understand how that works. It is the first collection under My Library.

    Mac OS X 10.8.5, Zotero 4.0.25.2
