Upgrade Storagestandalone / firefox confusion
Hello! I'm new to zotero and is having this confusion after installing the standalone version plus the firefox extension.
Basically, I started the standalone version, set up my sync account and collection folders, and what's best, I set up the "base directory" for all of my pdf files (this is the primary reason I chose zotero over Mendeley!) so I can manage the same copy of my references between my desktop and laptop. I also changed the "data directory" location to my D: drive. All look good!
Now, within Firefox, I can grab records directly from a webpage with the zotero FF extension I just installed. But then I realize that the extension doesn't seem to talk to the standalone at all. When I click the big "Z" button on the top right of the FF window, the zotero subpanel appears, with my newly-grabbed literature listed, however my standalone window is completely unaware of this new item. - Then I found that I still have to setup my sync account in the FF extension, neither does it have any knowledge of the "base directory" and "data directory" that I've just set up in the standalone preferences. At this point it looks like I'm having two independent versions of Zotero running, one in FF and one by itself.
Am I missing anything to make firefox work seamlessly with the standalone? Thanks!

also sounds like you're misunderstanding what the base directory does, but that's separate.
Also, after I manually set up data dir sharing, the file base directories still seems unsynced. Guess I have to manually put them to be the same as well.
Can you be more clear about my misunderstanding of the base directory? From what I read, the files links in the zotero database are stored as relative paths to the base dir, therefore if I maintain an exact copy of the file directories on two machines, I can run zotero on either one of them without problem. Am I right? Thanks.
In other words, you cannot tell Zotero itself where to store files. By itself, it will always store them in the storage folder within the Zotero data directory.
