no translator could be found

Hi,

I am importing my library from EndNote X2. I have tried RIS, BIB export formats, changed file extensions to txt, ris, bib. Every time I get an error No translator could be found... Many of the other strategies in the forums did not work either. Has anyone else been able to solve this problem?
  • By "BIB," do you mean "BibTeX?"

Verify that the file actually contains RIS (or whatever format you are using) by inspecting it in a text editor. Some people have previously found that the files they were importing were actually formatted citations & not the export format.

You might also try to import smaller subsets of your whole EndNote library to see if there might be an issue with just a few records.
  • I am a new user to Zotero and have the same issue - I'm not sure what RIS is, but my exporting in BibTeX format to a .txt file produces something for which Zotero says it cannot find translator. if anyone has solved this problem that would be great.
    thanks

  • Just to answer my own query, in case any other freshman needs help - i downloaded the RIS (Reference Manager for Export) Output style from the Endnote website, and tried exporting my Endnote libraries to .txt using this Output style, and Zotero imported it very well. The BibTeX Output style did not work.
  • Obviously, it'd be nice to have the BibTeX translator working too. If you find a small BibTeX file that fails, please provide it.
  • What is RIS? I cannot find it on my output styles in EndNote. I have BibTeX, but when I try to export it, it says that there is no translater. How do you convert the file to RIS?
  • BibTeX should also work--name it with a .bib extension & confirm that it is valid.

However, RIS is recommended currently. You can get an export filter for EndNote from:

    http://www.endnote.com/support/enstyledetail.asp?SORT=2&PLAT=0&PAGE=1&METH=0&DISC=none&JOUR=RIS&BSRT=none&FF1=none&FF2=none&FF3=none&CITE=none&DKEY=714200664509EAA
  • Still having problems with the RIS. When selecting which type of file to save it as, only .txt available.
  • You can always manually edit the .txt to .ris

What is important is that the exported file more or less conforms to the RIS spec. If you open the exported file it should look more or less like this. If it looks like that, just manually switch .txt to .ris and try importing it.
