Problems with firefox extension

Hello,

I have a problem in using Zotero at my new computer. I use the standalone version and I now have trouble with the firefox extension. There is no icon to save literature and under add-ons I see this error:
"Die Zotero-Datenbank kann nicht geöffnet werden. Stellen Sie sicher, dass sie Lese- und Schreibrechte für alle Dateien im Zotero-Datenverzeichnis haben." In English: I have no rights to write or read for all data of my Zotero data directory.
I also tried to get away from the standalone version to the firefox version, but it also didn't work. I use firefox 33.1.1
Thanks for helping me.
Nina

Please provide an Error Report ID https://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_problems

Edit: but also, you can just check yourself where your Zotero data directory is. Make sure it's not on a network share or inside a Dropbox folder (or some other location that is synced by a third party application). Also, try disabling your security software (if any is installed)
  • There is no error report ID. Zotero says there is no problem. The standalone works well. However, under Firefox I am not able to save, because the icon is missing and the error that I have no rights to write or read for all data of my Zotero data directory can be found.
I changed the directory, it is still the same. The security software does not interfere with the browser.
  • There is no error report ID. Zotero says there is no problem. The standalone works well.
This would have to come from the Firefox extension, not Zotero Standalone, but I'm not entirely sure that you would be able to open Zotero to send the Error Report.
under Firefox I am not able to save, because the icon is missing and the error that I have no rights to write or read for all data of my Zotero data directory can be found.
Where exactly are you seeing this error? Could you be more specific than "under add-ons", since I'm not sure how that error could be displayed there?

You _should_ be able to close Zotero Standalone, and then open Zotero in Firefox either via the Zotero icon _next to_ the URL bar or using keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + Z (make sure your cursor is not in a text box). You should then be able to submit an error report following the same instructions.
  • Sorry, I was not specific enough. I can't open Zotero in Firefox neither via the Zotero icon next to the URL bar nor using keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + Z (make sure your cursor is not in a text box). If I try the window appears with that error that I have no rights to write or read for all data of my Zotero data directory can be found.
  • Could you submit real-time debug log to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread? Could you also tell us the path to your Zotero data directory in Zotero Standalone?
  • It took me some time, because in my windows (7, 64bit) it was a little bit different from what I found in your link, but I was succesful and sent it to the support.

zotero(3)(+0000000): Using data directory C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero Standalone"
Yikes. You set this manually, and it's totally wrong. That's your application directory, and it should never be the specified location for the data directory. So you'll need to fix that in the Zotero preferences.
  • I just changed it yesterday, because it didn't work. However, if I fix it and set it back to the firefox profile folder, it is still the same.
  • At the very least you would get a different error message in the debug log, if not in the error message that pops up to the user. Please submit another debug log with the corrected path.
  • "zotero(3)(+0000000): Using data directory C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero Standalone"

Okay, that is the problem. It doesn't matter what kind of directory I edit, this error always appears. So, I can't change the directory at the moment- I have no idea why. I tried the firefox profile folder and other folders. I closed everything, I also restarted the computer. ???
  • How are you changing it? At this point, the most accessible way would be to open Firefox, go to about:config and edit the value of extensions.zotero.dataDir
  • Okay, now it is running with the firefox version. The standalone with the extension is not working under my firefox, but I am happy that something is working now.
I always installed the extension and I couldn't fix the problem there. I was automatically asked for the path of my data directory and this did not work.
  • I'm guessing that you were automatically asked if you want to share the data directory with Zotero Standalone (to which you probably wanted to say yes). However, the dialog also gives you an option so choose a specific data directory, which, I'm guessing, is what you chose instead.

In any case, see https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/sharing_data_directory If you do it correctly, you will not have any issues and everything will work as expected.
  • For sure you are right. I think I tried too often and always did something else wrong. However, the link is helpful. Thank you very much!
