Style Error: Environmental Science: Processes & Impacts

The style is wrong and gives e.g.

1. M. S. Ross, A. dos S. Pereira, J. Fennell, M. Davies, J. Johnson, L. Sliva and J. W. Martin, Environmental Science & Technology, 2012, 46, 12796–12805.

It should, however, give:

1 M. S. Ross, A. dos S. Pereira, J. Fennell, M. Davies, J. Johnson, L. Sliva and J. W. Martin, Env. Sci. Technol., 2012, 46, 12796–12805.

(See e.g. http://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlepdf/2015/em/c4em00506f)

I would edit it, but it doesn't actually contain the code and instead just links to other codes. Can someone please edit this style or let me know how to do it?
  • The style links to the style for the "Royal Society of Chemistry". However, it already uses the short journal title if present (only if that fails it uses the long version). It seems for me that you are missing this information in your data. Add "Env. Sci. Technol." as the abbreviated journal title in zotero and refresh the bibliography.
  • Okay, my default setting is to use the archives journal abbreviations, I want aware that es&t is not contained in them. In any case, it also has 1. when it should be just 1 in the bibliography?
  • We'll take care of the period, but what do you mean by
my default setting is to use the archives journal abbreviations, I want aware that es&t is not contained in them
? Which archives journal abbreviations? If you mean Zotero's built in abbreviations, those should work, but will only work when you're using the word processor add-on.
  • Thanks for fixing the period!

Ah, that was the problem - I didn't realise that abbreviations would only work for the word processor add-on.

    Many thanks :)
  • Okay, I do have another question - as you take away the period, is it possible to insert a space after the number instead of a tab? With a tab, the formatting in word gets totally messed around as the double digit numbers will by default receive a larger tab.

I know this sounds odd, but this is really a problem in documents and impossible to change around without a huge amount of individual edits, and, as I mentioned, I don't really know how to change it myself as the style doesn't contain the code but instead just references other styles.
  • well, but space instead of tab will mess with the alignment of the 2nd line. Formatting in Word really shouldn't be an issue (unless, again, you're not using the Word add-on. In that case, I'd recommend saving as RTF, which provides the most accurate formatting. Cut and paste via clipboard is often not great).

If you want to change the style yourself, just install and edit Royal Society of Chemistry.
  • Hm, okay, that makes sense, I will try that :). Thanks!
  • (why are you not using the word processor add-on, btw.? That seems like a giant hassle especially for numerical styles. You have to re-number in the text every time you add a citation?)
  • Ehm ... I am using the word processor add-on, I just still find the formatting sometimes a hassle (which is I guess due to the fact that I run Windows 8 and less due to Zotero's issues). When I tried out the style, however I used the clipboard export, as I didn't know that it would give me different results. Makes more sense now? :)
  • yes. Any formatting particulars? Windows 8 shouldn't have any effect. Word 2013 is the only thing that matters.
  • I use Word 2013, but it looks different on my computer than on others as it uses Windows 8 - it looks like an App which is endlessly annoying. Anyway, this has nothing to do with Zotero I guess.

So, if I use this style, it just looks messy - it looks okay as text, so if I copy paste it it looks like this

    9. J. Anderson, S. B. Wiseman, A. Moustafa, M. Gamal El-Din, K. Liber and J. P. Giesy, Water Res., 2012, 46, 1662–1672.
    10. R. J. Kavanagh, R. A. Frank, K. D. Oakes, M. R. Servos, R. F. Young, P. M. Fedorak, M. D. MacKinnon, K. R. Solomon, D. G. Dixon and G. Van Der Kraak, Aquat. Toxicol., 2011, 101, 214–220.

However, the hop from 9 to 10 (which is wider), makes the text start at a different position, because the first tab is shorter. When I set all tabs to a - default - short length, it still starts at a different position. Then, the next line starts not at the number, but after the period. Also, the period is still there and shouldn't be.
  • I would send you a screenshot, but can I add pictures to this forum?
  • upload to a free image hosting site (dropbox, imgur.com) and link to it here. (and I haven't taken care of the period yes, so no surprise there).
  • OK, removed the period and maybe the change I made will also make the alignment work better for you.
The updated version will appear on the repository within 30mins (check the timestamp). Update your copy of the style by clicking "Update Now" in the General tab of the Zotero preferences.

Styles also update automatically within 24hs for Zotero 4.0+
In an existing document, you may have to switch to a different style and back for the changes to take effect once the style is updated.
Any further problems please let us know & thanks for reporting
