LibreOffice plug-in for Firefox not possible to download

I have Firefox 29.0.1, LibreOffice 4.1.6.2 and are trying to download the ZOTERO LibreOffice plug-in 3.5.9 without success. Have tried all Troubleshooting suggestions. Any further suggestions?
  • what exactly is happening? It doesn't download or it doesn't install? If the latter, what exactly happens and what have you tried?
    The download link on
    https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_installation
    is definitely working.
  • Firefox is saying:

    Unable to connect.
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at download.zotero.org.

It is not an internet problem as everything else is working fine, and having tried all day, it cannot depend on heavy traffic.
  • If you have another browser installed, try downloading the file from there, then simply open it in Firefox to install. See if that works.
Beyond that, Dan would have to say.
  • This was what I got when trying Chrome

"Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to download.zotero.org

    Did you mean: zotero.org"

    Will also try IE.
  • Is there anything peculiar about the internet connection you're on? A corporate firewall or so?
You could try temporarily disabling security software, maybe. The link is definitely fine, I tried when I posted.
  • The same!

"Oops! Internet Explorer could not connect to download.zotero.org

    Did you mean: zotero.org"

I will try your last suggestion later or tomorrow. Have to work now!!
  • This is a problem with your network — I'd guess, in technical terms, a proxy server that doesn't support Server Name Indication (SNI).

What happens if you load this page? Do you get an error? It should load without an error and say "Great! Your client…" on the second line. If the problem is what I'm guessing it is, you'd instead get a certificate error and, if you allow the connection, the line "Unfortunately, your client…".
  • Actually, no, that wouldn't even be the issue, because the plugin download links are still HTTP, not HTTPS. So I actually have no idea why it's not working for you.

In any case, as a temporary fix, you can replace download.zotero.org in the URL with zotero-download.s3.amazonaws.com. So, for example, for 3.5.9 of the LibreOffice plugin, you can try this:

    http://zotero-download.s3.amazonaws.com/integration/Zotero-LibreOffice-Plugin-3.5.9.xpi
  • You are right in your second comment. The test page loaded without any error. Tonight my internet connection is not fast enough to test your temporary fix, but at least the download starts of 2,1 MB which is expected to take 4 hours. Will have a much faster connection tomorrow. Then I will give it a try. Anyhow thanks for your effort.
  • Coming back to my slow connection, it how managed to download the plug-in successfully in less than a minute. What a difference! Now I recognize the Zotero icons in the toolbar, which is a sign the plug-in is finally downloaded. Thanks again Dan, and kudos for you.
  • If there's a network administrator or ISP on the network where download.zotero.org isn't working, it might be worth asking them about it. That domain is on Amazon's content distribution network, so if it doesn't work it could affect a lot of content on the web, and your network administrators might want to look into it.
  • (And if you continue to use that network it would also impact your ability to download updates to Zotero and the plugins.)
  • Same problem. I use wget to download, and it works.

    wget download.zotero.org/integration/Zotero-LibreOffice-Plugin-3.5.6.xpi
  • Since the earlier posts in this thread we've realized that this occurs when something (a network or security software) is intercepting secure traffic and serving fake SSL certificates. See Step 5 here:

    https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/ssl_certificate_error

It should say that the connection is verified by GeoTrust or RapidSSL. If it says something else, hopefully you know why and understand the security ramifications — and if not, then it means that your secure traffic is being intercepted.
