Can not import new files

RE: Error report

I can no longer import files - the symbol that used to display in the address line is not showing up for documents with citation information (e.g. in Pubmed)

Please help! I love this program and don't want to lose my library!
  • You're using Zotero 4.0.20.2, which is out of date. Upgrade to 4.0.23 (and make sure add-on auto-updating is enabled in Firefox).
  • I received an error message when I tried to download the new version.

"The add-on could not be downloaded because of a connection failure on www.zotero.org"

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you!
  • do you happen to have bitdefender installed? If so, disable it. If not, when you click on the lock symbol at the right of the URL bar on this page, what does it say after "Verified by:"?
  • I don't have bitdefender installed.

    It says: DO_NOT_TRUST

I assume that is causing the problem? How do I fix it?

Other Add-ons I had installed which I have just disabled are Adblock plus, Flashblock, and No Script. they are now disabled.
  • no, this isn't an add-on. Something or someone is intercepting your SSL traffic, which is either malicious software or some type of security software that does something stupid.

If you click on "More Information" after clicking the lock, what do you see? You can also take a screenshot, upload to a free image hosting site and link to it here.
  • Here is the screen shot

Fiddler installs SSL certificates that start with DO_NOT_TRUST. If you have that installed, you'll have to disable it

edit: yes, that's fiddler in the screenshot. Disable it.
  • (and you really only should have that running if you know what you're doing and pretty much never for regular browsing. It's a testing/debugging tool and using it for regular browsing is quite dangerous).
  • So I've never heard of fiddler and have no idea why its on my computer... this is a University owned computer (my work computer) so I will ask our IT guys about it.

Where can I find it? I don't see it in my program list...
  • It's possible that fiddler was uninstalled, but the proxy settings remained. I know that the root certificates also remain in the system. If you don't have administrator rights on your computer, then it's likely that you won't be able to fix this issue yourself anyway. I would ask your IT to clean this up, since they probably installed fiddler on your computer in the first place.
  • will do. Thanks so much for the help!
  • aurimas: Something has to be returning that fake cert, so I don't think it could've been uninstalled. (The root cert might stay behind, but nothing would chain to it.)

marobins: We've also seen malware install Fiddler behind-the-scenes, so that's another possibility. If it was your IT folks, you should make sure they have a very good answer for why they were silently intercepting your supposedly secure traffic.
  • Thanks again. Good to know!
  • Update: It was a program called "BrowserSafeguard" that somehow got installed in a Local folder and used fiddler to intercept and send my browsing history to multiple places internationally. IT was also able to find about 60 other files that had been installed somehow. It wasn't them and no idea how these files and that program got installed. It was sometime in May. It was while I was traveling so probably from using a wifi network that wasn't secure.

Something to watch out for in the future!!!

Thanks again for your help diagnosing the problem! Zotero is updated and working well!
