internet connection and citation download failures

I am having problems with Zotero connecting to internet. I run Zotero on a mac desktop using chrome. Things are up to date.

Today I noticed that the zotero icon was gone from the chrome adress bar. I downloaded version 4.0.23 manually, because the connection is refused if I ask the software to check for updates. I have to use a proxy at work, but I can't figure out where to enter the proxy settings for zotero.
Now, with the latest version, the icon is back. However, any reference download fails, including the citation which always used to get downloaded before I upgraded to the latest version.
If I try to connect zotero to internet, I get the following message:"error connecting to server, check your internet connection". Then I click error report, and get the following text:
"[JavaScript Error: "Error connecting to server. Check your Internet connection." {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/sync.js" line: 652}]
[JavaScript Error: "Error connecting to server. Check your Internet connection." {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/sync.js" line: 652}]
[JavaScript Error: "TypeError: recentWindow.openUILinkIn is not a function" {file: "chrome://global/content/contentAreaUtils.js" line: 1065}]

version => 4.0.23, platform => MacIntel, oscpu => Intel Mac OS X 10.9, locale => en-US, appName => Zotero, appVersion => 4.0.23, extensions => Zotero Word for Mac Integration (3.5.7.SA.4.0.23, extension), Zotero LibreOffice Integration (3.5.9.SA.4.0.23, extension), Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in, Version 11.0.09 (11.0.09, plugin), Shockwave Flash (15.0.0.152, plugin), Default Browser Helper (537, plugin), QuickTime Plug-in 7.7.3 (7.7.3, plugin), SharePoint Browser Plug-in (14.4.3, plugin), Google Talk Plugin (5.4.2.18903, plugin), Google Talk Plugin Video Renderer (5.4.2.18903, plugin), AdobeAAMDetect (AdobeAAMDetect 2.0.0.0, plugin), Java Applet Plug-in (Java 7 Update 55, plugin)".

Then I click continue, and get the following error message: "Invalid response from repository", and am invited to either cancel or go back...

Thanks for your help!
  • Zotero will use your system proxy settings settings by default, so if those are set up correctly, it should work. If your company network is intercepting HTTPS connections, that could cause problems, though. If you click on the padlock icon at the top of this page in Chrome and click on Connection, does it say "verified by RapidSSL" or something else?

If it does say "RapidSSL", try generating debug output for Zotero startup, using the "Enable after restart" option. You probably won't be able to submit the output and get a Debug ID, but you can click View Output and either copy and paste the output here or email it to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread.

Got your email. Can you confirm that you see "verified by RapidSSL" for the above?

Beyond that, your debug output shows this:
No general proxy or PAC file found -- assuming direct connection
That means that as far as Zotero is concerned there's no proxy configured on your system. If you check your system proxy settings, what are they set to? (We don't need the values, but which options are in use?)
  • Yes, I see "verified by RapidSSL".

    Proxy is configured for:
    _Automatic Proxy Configuration
    _Web Proxy (HTTP)
    _Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS)
    _FTP Proxy
    _SOCKS Proxy
    _Streaming Proxy (RTSP)
    _Gopher Proxy

Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) option is ticked.

Is that the information you asked for?
  • I'm not quite sure what you mean there. Are you saying all of those are ticked?
  • yes, all these are ticked

It seems unusual for all of those to be selected, since they seem sort of mutually exclusive. Can you try selecting Automatic Proxy Configuration and unchecking all others, and also vice versa, restarting Zotero in between each attempt?
  • (You can disregard "Passive FTP Mode (PASV)".)
