Standalone Keeps Freezing/Not Responding

I use Zotero for work, and therefore have quite a bit of data on there (25,000 entries and a little less than 100 subcategories). In the past week, however, my Standalone has started acting up, which is causing some distress for me, since I rely on it completely for work.

Sometimes it starts immediately, but the Standalone generally freezes within a few minutes of opening. No error message appears, the Standalone just doesn't react and Windows says it's Not Responding. Windows isn't affected, since I can minimize the unresponsive Standalone.

Do I have too much data on Zotero (note: I have the unlimited data plan). Please help!
  • do you have a touchscreen monitor by any chance?
  • My guess would be that Zotero is syncing. Check the circular green arrow at the top right, see if it's spinning when you start Zotero and if it doesn't stop spinning before the freeze up. Does Zotero eventually unfreeze?
  • I do not have a touchscreen, and it doesn't appear to be a synching issue. The synching goes through fine at times, and other times it freezes when it's not synching, but rather when I click on a category. I've left it for a period of 12 hours and it didn't unfreeze.
  • Can you confirm that you're using Zotero Standalone 4.0.23? (if not, update)

While a large library (yours is probably close to what we would call large if you have note and file attachments) may slow down Zotero, it should definitely not freeze it permanently. Do try to collapse the tag pane though, as that is known to have some performance issues (again, shouldn't freeze Zotero for that long).

If you can replicate this somewhat reliably, please follow the real-time debug output instructions to submit a log for an action that makes Zotero hang. Please send the log to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread. Unfortunately, on Windows, real-time debugging makes Zotero run even slower, so make sure you're submitting a log for a "permanent" freeze (i.e. wait a few minutes to see if Zotero doesn't start responding).
  • I'm updating Zotero now and will try it again with the collapsed tag pane to see if that resolves things.
