Oxford style referencing

I and my uni colleagues LOVE zotero BUT we are told to use Oxford style referencing which is not in the list - I use the nearest one to it which is full note at the bottom of the page with bibliography. Unfortunatley the Oxford style requires us to include WHERE the book was published - Is this available and if so what style is it called?
Sorry if this is an obvious question I have searched for an answer in the archives without success so far.
  • You can get a quick view of exactly what the styles all look like by mousing over different formats on the styles page.

I would take a look at the Harvard style, the various Chicago styles and the MHRA styles for a start, then browse through some of the others. If you can't find one that works post a comment in the forums mentioning the closest style, exactly where your style departs from the other style, and a link to documentation supporting the differences you discuss.

Hi! That can be great if one could select what he wants to display (Title, Author, Abstract and other from "Info"-tab of zotero) in reference/citation/create bibliography tool of zotero by make it active in something like "menu"-box.
  • OK I have looked at this and the style I am using should give me the city or town of publication - I am now thinking it must be my use of Amazon to capture the information to Zotero from the ISBN number - this will mean I have to manually input this information by editing the citation once the book is captured in there. Does anyone agree if my reasoning here is right and if so is there a way around it?
  • have you tried doing a search on any one of your libraries for the book? the list comes up, click on the folder icon in the url line and zotero opens a window with the book info; select the one you want and it should enter it pretty much as is...I've had a couple of glitches where i get the message about some translation issues....Ive found amazon a bit tricky too.
  • Instead of amazon I'd suggest using worldcat, which provides cleaner entries.
    Amazon isn't super consistent.
  • I came across a reference at http://mercuriuspoliticus.wordpress.com/2007/12/24/zotero-and-oxford-style-references/ which suggests that the 'History journal' style (http://www.zotero.org/styles/history-journal/dev) is a generic Oxford style. Would others having to work with the Oxford style agree that this is the best starting point? Or is the consensus that either the Harvard or Chicago style. If someone could provide details about the differences between Oxford style and some of these others I would be willing to take a crack at producing an Oxford style. Thanks for any comments and let me know how I can be of help. Peace - Anthony
  • This seems to be a pretty comprehensive guide to "Oxford" Referencing:
    http://www.deakin.edu.au/current-students/study-support/study-skills/handouts/oxford-docnote.php
although my sense is that "Oxford" just like "Harvard" isn't a very precise style.
I'd start with "History Journal" or with "Chicago Full Note" - the former has the advantage of being closer, the latter of being more comprehensive (including a wider range of sources).
  • Thanks Adam. The link you gave should give a friend of mine some specific examples to go through. I can handle working up an xml file. I think I would start with History Journal since it is closer and build it up so that it is more complete in line with the document you provided. Peace - Anthony
  • Hi - our PhD cohort is keen to know whether there has been any progress in developing an Oxford style? It doesn't seem to be appearing in the Style Repository (at least a generic Oxford style). It will certainly make Zotero much more appealing to us if we can access an Oxford style.
    Thanks!
  • no one has done the things we ask for when requesting styles so far, so no, there is no style up to now
