sync linked files to zotero storage

I had zotfile moved many files to dropbox before. Now I am trying to switch to zotero storage (I subscribe zotero storage). I just realized zotero will not sync those linked files. Is there a quick fix for this situation? I noticed that my online zotero library is only 1 G, but my local zotero directory is 11 G. I have no idea why is that.

  • but my local zotero directory is 11 G.
Do you mean the "storage" directory inside your Zotero data directory? Or are you talking about the DropBox folder? If the latter, then Zotero won't sync those files (as you say above). Use Zotfile to move files back to your Zotero storage directory. In Zotfile preferences -> General settings, change it back to "Attach stored copy of file"
  • Thanks. I mean the whole zotero data directory. I tried not to use dropbox anymore. I change the setting in zotfile preferences, and then click the sync. It stops and gave the following error message.

[JavaScript Error: "Database permanently closed; not re-opening" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/db.js" line: 1097}]
[JavaScript Error: "TypeError: Zotero.ZotFile is undefined" {file: "chrome://browser/content/browser.xul" line: 1}]

  • Have you tried restarting Firefox/Zotero? You haven't removed ZotFile yet, have you?
  • I still have ZotFile, just for renaming purpose, not moving. I renamed Firefox. It gave the following error message. What is the best strategy to solve this kind of error. I do not know where it is.

  • That's from an error report, though, right? What error did you actually see on screen?
  • Yes. I did not see any error on screen, nothing pop up. That sync button just stops rotating and I saw this error in the error report. I guess it is just stuck there. I have to get rid of it to sync to zotero storage.

    Thanks,

  • I'm not sure where you are in your process. So this is a sync error? Did you successfully move all your files back into zotero storage?
  • I have no idea if the zotfile move any file back to zotero storage. I did check the option "Attach stored copy of files" and I gave the custom location of those pdf files though it greys out. And I marked the "use the subfolder defined by", though it greys out too.

My online zotero storage only shows up like 1.3 G.

  • I tried the Zotero standalone with zotfile add-on. It did not give any error in error report as shown below. I guess the problem really is the zotfile did not move the linkfiles from Dropbox back to zotero storage. I checked the pdf in database, it is still linked to pdfs in dropbox.

No errors have been logged since Zotero started.

  • Ah, yes. Sorry, I missed a step in my instructions. After changing the preference in Zotfile, you need to select all the items in your library (My Library -> select one item in the center pane -> Ctrl/Cmd + A), then right-click, and select Manage Attachments -> Rename Attachments. This will switch links back to stored attachment, but will also rename the attachments based on the rules in Zotfile Preferences -> Renaming Rules (generally, those rules should be ok)
  • oh yes. Thanks. It is moving.
