zotero import icon disappeared from google chrome and lybrary missing

Hi

my Zotero connector has disappeared from chrome
what is worst in the zotero standalone (for MS word) all my references have disappeared

I tried to download zotero connector for chrome but for some reason i get a netwrok failure message every time.

Also i forgot my password and since the email account I used to resgiter with zotero the first time has been suppressed, i cannot receive any mail to retrieve my password....

Help!

ok sorry somehow i recovered my library in the zotero standalone but still have the problem of the missing connector in chrome (V 34.0.1847.131 dev-m)

so i downloaded firefox, and zotero for firefox

everything seems to work now except that if I try to download the additional bibliographic styles firefox won't automatically load them into zotero but ask how i want to open, or where do I wnat to save the .csl file...how do i get the new styles to work in zotero? showld i save it in a specific directory?
  • you download the CSL styles from zotero.org/styles in Firefox and that's the message you're getting? That would be very odd. Could you confirm which version of the Zotero add-on for Firefox you're using?

i downloaded it today so it's zotero 4.0 for firefox...right?
  • well, I'd like you to check in the Firefox add-ons -- mostly to make sure it's actually installed, but also to confirm that you have the most recent version.
  • but also, please confirm that you're downloading the CSL file through Firefox (not Chrome) and that you're clicking on the title of the style at zotero.org/styles (not View Source or right-clicking -> Save Link As.., etc.)

If you need a quick workaround, you can add the downloaded style to Zotero via Preferences -> Cite -> Styles (click the + button)

    ok i got it now:
if i do this from firefox it works (although it can be very slow...)
then i find the new styles into the standalone

if i do this from the standalone it does not allow me to upload it into zotero (even though it still launches firefox...)
  • if i do this from firefox it works (although it is very slow...)
    Which part is slow?
if i do this from the standalone it does not allow me to upload it into zotero (even though it still launches firefox...)
What exactly are you doing here? Adding the .csl file via Preferences -> Cite -> Styles?

    Ok sorry

After opening Firefox. i click on the "Z" button on the top right
to open the zotero in the bottom half of the screen. Then I click on the little grey toothed wheel and then on the "options" in the popo up menu that appears. this takes me to styles. from there a new firefox page (styles repository) opens where i can select the style of choice. A window appears sking if i want to install the styles. Clicking yes, i get to install the style.

If i try to do this by opening the standalone, it does not work and instead of the window asking if i want to install the style a window asking where do i want to save the csl file appears

the slow part is using firefox(compared to chrome)

  • If i try to do this by opening the standalone, it does not work and instead of the window asking if i want to install the style a window asking where do i want to save the csl file appears
right, and when you do that and then open the file with a double click in your file system or select it after clicking the + in Zotero it will install.
the slow part is using firefox(compared to chrome)
I'm always a bit dubious about this claim and suspect it goes back to the old Firefox 3.6 days, when this was indeed true. With current versions, benchmarking tests never show much of a difference between the two.

But be that as it may: What exactly happens when you try to install the Chrome connector from: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/zotero-connector/ekhagklcjbdpajgpjgmbionohlpdbjgc?hl=en

when I try to install the Chrome connector I get this message

    "An error occured
    network failed"

That's not a Zotero error message, but likely some type of Chrome error.
Are you translating this or is this exactly how it appears?

edit: and if you could confirm your Chrome version number
  • I have chrome version
    34.0.1847.131 dev-m

And no, I am not translating it
  • that version is no longer supported by google. I can't guarantee it'll make a difference, but you should start by updating to the current version (37.0.x)
  • For the chrome error see https://productforums.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!category-topic/chrome/windows8/9RngDMMugTA They suggest a "corrupt profile", but I doubt that simply re-installing Chrome would fix this (it might). You can also try https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/142059?hl=en

Just based on the error, it's possible that you're behind a proxy that intercepts secure traffic and Chrome is complaining about that. Check your proxy settings in Chrome and in your system settings. If it is a proxy issue, it would probably be set in Chrome, since Firefox doesn't seem to be affected.
  • ok downloaded version 37 of chrome, installed the connector: everything works just fine !
    thanks so much
