Zotero icon not showing up in URL/address bar

Hi, I would also like to report that I am having an issue with the zotero icon not appearing in the url/address bar for any websites. Everything was working normally for me earlier this week.

Report ID: 1120908896
Operating System: Windows 7 (64-bit)
Browser: Firefox 32.0.2
Zotero Version: Zotero Standalone 4.0.22, with Zotero 4.0.17.1 addon

I tried restarting my browser and Zotero standalone several times (including after disabling all add-ons except Zotero), with no luck.

I restarted my computer and installed all Windows updates, with no luck.

I tried all the troubleshooting issues on this page with no luck: https://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues

I got no addres bar icon here:

Thanks for the help
  • update the Firefox add-on. I don't think 4.0.17 is even compatible with Firefox 32.
  • OK thank you. So I uninstalled the 4.0.17 Firefox add-on and tried to install an up-to-date add-on from https://www.zotero.org/download/, but got an error from Firefox saying "The add-on could not be downloaded because of a connection failure on www.zotero.org"

I have followed up with these discussions:
    https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/35649/failure-to-download-40/
    https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/40230/

Clicking on the address bar padlock for me says:
    You are connected to
    zotero.org
    which is run by
    (unknown)
    Verified by Bitdefender
The connection to this website is secure.

Bitdefender is my antivirus software installed. To the best of my knowledge, I have no viruses from regular scans with Bitdefender. And as I mentioned above, Zotero and everything else was working normally just a few days ago. Any ideas? I appreciate the help
  • This is a Bitdefender issue and really a terrible idea on their part. See here for how to disable that particular part of "functionality"
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/932399
  • OK, thanks for the insightful tip! Disabled the setting in Bitdefender, and now the padlock says I'm Verified by GeoTrust, Inc.

Unfortunately, I'm getting the same "The add-on could not be downloaded because of a connection failure on www.zotero.org" error as above, which unfortunately the other forum topics I found on this error couldn't help with. Any other thoughts? Thanks again

See if you can download the .xpi file from another browser, then install it by simply opening it in Firefox (e.g. by dragging it to an open Firefox window).
  • Awesome, that finally solved the issue, the address bar icon is back and everything is working properly now! So to prevent the issue from recurring, is there some setting to check to make sure that the Zotero add-on will automatically update? The regular Zotero standalone seems to have automatically updated as expected, but somehow the old Firefox add-on was left behind.

Thanks again, really appreciate all the help!
  • Firefox add-ons are set to auto-update by default, so I don't know why that didn't work. My guess would be that it's the same reason the download and install in Firefox didn't work. My guess would still be that it's related to BitDefender, maybe Dan or Aurimas have another idea.
  • Yes, if you can't install the XPI manually, it's unlikely that auto-update would work. Bitdefender was definitely causing that earlier failure — it should work now if you're seeing GeoTrust for the padlock, but if not try clearing the Firefox cache.
  • Great, thanks so much Adam and Dan
  • Hi All,

I just wanted to confirm, for the benefit of anyone else with Bitdefender, that I had the same issue with the SSL scanning.

I followed the instructions on the page linked by Adam above, which were:

BitDefender -> Privacy settings -> disable Scan SSL

    I also cleared the cache.

It worked for me, though I had to restart/reboot first. (Actually I rebooted, but didn't try just restarting Firefox.)
