Startup error

When I try to open Zotero (with Firefox 20.0, running on Ubuntu 10.04), I get an alert message saying "Une erreur s'est produite lors du démarrage de Zotero" (and nothing more). I have followed the procedure described on https://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_problems; but in the console no line appears to be relevant.
Thanks for help!

Firefox 20 is out of date and insecure, and the latest version of Zotero won't work with it. You'll need to upgrade to either the latest version (currently 30) or the latest Extended Support Release version (currently 24).
  • I ran into the same problem the morning: "There was an error starting Zotero" and there is not even a single message in the error console.
I created a new firefox profile and installed Zotero from scratch, but that did not make any difference.
Zotero ran fine in my setup last week, and I did not make any changes.
I am running Firefox 17.0.11 ESR on CentOs 5, i.e. I cannot upgrade to a newer Firefox version.

I'd appreciate any hints on how to debug the problem. Thanks!
  • You can downgrade your Zotero version, but really you shouldn't be running outdated Firefox under any circumstances. CentOS is rather reckless if they're forcing people to use outdated Firefox versions (the current ESR is 24).

(CentOS 5 is — as of a couple days ago — two major versions behind the latest version. CentOS 6 was released three years ago to the day. Granted, part of the point of RHEL/CentOS is that you get 10 years of support, but that paradigm doesn't make much sense on a desktop system. CentOS 5 was released in April 2007, so expecting current software versions to work is fairly unreasonable.)
  • I eventually upgraded Firefox (to version 32), and Zotero works fine again. Thanks for the help!
