Zotero to Endnote 7.1 import

Hi. I'm following these simple instructions for importing a Zotero library to Endnote (version 7.1) on a Mac running Mavericks:

Zotero to EndNote

To save your Zotero library for importing into EndNote, click the Zotero button that looks like a gear and choose "Export Library." Choose RIS as the file type and pick a filename.

In EndNote, click "File" and then "Import." Click the "Choose File" button and select the file you just exported from Zotero. Set Import Option to "Reference Manager (RIS)" and click Import.

I followed these instructions exactly, but when I imported the Zotero library (as an RIS file) into Endnote, nothing happens.

This should be simple and straight forward, so I'm not sure why it isn't working.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Matthew
  • I assume this is Endnote X7.1 (which stands for 17.1), not actually 7.1 yes?
Should just work. You could try if using Endnote XML as export format in Zotero works better. You could also try if exporting/importing smaller subsets of your library works.

When I export the Zotero library should I uncheck notes and files? I've tried checking and unchecking them and it doesn't work either way. I've also tried exporting as XML and RIS. And yes, I am working with Endnote X7.1, or 17.1.
  • shouldn't matter either way, but unchecking files, in particular, removes a possible source of problems (though, obviously, your files won't import into Endnote, though I'm not sure they will either way).
  • Try doing this with one item in Zotero. Export it into RIS or Endnote XML and see if you can import it into EndNote. If you can't post the contents of the file on http://gist.github.com and link to it here. It might be an EndNote issue, in which case it's out of our hands, but we'll need to make sure.
  • I think I solved the problem. When I clicked on the exported RIS file to open it, it was opening it in another bibliographic program that I have on my computer (Papers). I move that program to the trash, and then when I clicked on the file, it asked me what program I wanted to open it in. I selected Endnote, and it opened the file. This I think associated Endnote with RIS files, so now when I click on them, they automatically open in Endnote. I'm still not able to import the files directly into Endnote for whatever reason. But at least I have a way of getting them into Endnote.

    Thanks adam and aurimas.
