changing attachments through an external agent?

If I want to change an attached file through some external program and save it back to the same file location, can I get into any trouble? That is, does Zotero, for example, keep an internal hash of the file or anything else that would not be updated correctly.

In case you're wondering, there are two reasons for my wanting to do this. The first is to have an agent that watches for updates to a document. The other, and the main one, is to allow me to write a spider that keeps my dropbox directories and zotero sync'd. (Yes, I know about zotfile.)

  • Zotero only cares about the filepath, as long as you keep that exactly the same, you won't have any problems.
  • (changing a file through an external program and saving it back, btw., is the principal way to annotate PDFs, so if that caused problems it'd be pretty bad).
