Organizing Citations

Hello,

I am a graduate student and have already written a manuscript. Once reviewed my PI told me about Zotero and to plug my document in to have zotero re-organize my in-text citations and create a bibliography. I have been watching on-line tutorials but have not found what I need to do.

It seems as Zotero would be great during the initial writing process when I was collecting all my data and papers. Basically I was told Zotero can pick out in text citations and generate a bibliography that corresponds (in order) to which references were sited.

Can it do this? Every time I insert my manuscript (word document) into Zotero it says no references found? I'm guessing because its trying to generate a reference from my paper, but that is not what I'm trying to do.

Thank you for your time,
  • It is unclear how citations are placed into your document now. If there are none, you would want to use the zotero word processor plugin to insert them, one-by-one.

If there are already citations, you will need to replace them. If your citations happen to follow the Harvard author-date format (or similar), you may be able to massage them into something the RTF tool can understand.

If not, you will have to use the Zotero word processor plugin to replace them manually, one-by-one (there is no way for zotero to understand arbitrary citation formats).

  • While everything noksagt writes is good advice, just to be clear, the general answer to

is no, it can't (nor can any other tool).
