Startup problem

I have a problem with Zotero 4.0.21.5 in Firefox 31.0. Every time I launched Zotero gives the next message error:

"No se encuentra el directorio de datos de Zotero.

Directorio anterior: C:\Users\Federico Dávalos\Documents\2014\00-Doctorado\TesoroV20Doctorado\CR"

The only way is to select the default data directory, so I´m unable to use or open any of my data directories. The problem is the same with Zoteo Standalone.

I´m a heavy user of Zotero since the first releases in 2008 and is the first time that I have this kind of problems.

Any solution or advice? Thanks

  • Could you confirm that your directory exists at that path? (particularly, does the path to the directory contain the à character?)

As a workaround, you could try moving the directory to another location that does not contain any special characters. This shouldn't really be an issue, but it's worth a shot.
  • Yeah, this is going to be due to the accents in the original path (which is certainly not the path displayed above) — we've seen this same issue recently. Not sure if something changed on Mozilla's end that's causing these breakages now, but we'll have to look into it.

If you move your data directory outside your home directory and point Zotero there, that will be a temporary workaround.
  • (the interesting thing is that à has the same character code in UTF-8 as it does in windows-1252/ISO 8859-1, so I would be curious to see what the actual character is supposed to be)

Oh, I see now. That's not an i following the Ã, that's an inverted exclamation mark, which would make this an "á" in UTF-8 and that path was interpreted in windows-1252
  • aurimas and Dan,

    Thanks a lot.
I move the directory to the root c:\CR Zotero works without any trouble.

I have just pick up my PC from the service shop, where the tecnicians must recover and reinstalled all my data and system. They created the "Federico Dávalos", my spanish speaking name (really mexican), for the user directory. As an old MS-DOS user, I usually never use "foreign" or accented caracters to name directories or files. Now I must solve that to avoid any trouble in the future with other software.

  • Ah, OK, so then maybe not a new issue. We'll still look into it and post here if we have any updates.
