cannot save reference from chrome

hi,

despite the icon being available in the address bar to export the reference, nothing happens when I click on it (not even as much as an error msg) - I have the desktop application open.

please help urgently
  • Which URL are you trying to save from?
  • I'm using Google Scholar. it use to work perfectly fine before
  • See the linked page. We need more info to troubleshoot.
  • followed all the steps - still not working - sent debug log

Debug output has been sent to the Zotero server.

    The Debug ID is D1640186752.
  • When we print something in bold we really mean it:
"URL of a page that isn't working"
not just "google scholar"--we need a URL that you're actually trying this on.
  • the actual URLs are many but here are 2 examples:
    http://0-scholar.google.co.za.innopac.up.ac.za/scholar?q=investment+potential&btnG=&hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5

    http://0-scholar.google.co.za.innopac.up.ac.za/scholar?q=value+vs+growth+investing&btnG=&hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5

On the second URL - if I click on one of the search results to view the document, the zotero export works well. sometimes the pdf's do not download but at least the reference gets saved to zotero.

my point is that its a general problem when I want to save multiple references at once from the search results.
  • right, and the problem is that you're accessing google scholar through a proxy which puts a 0- in front of the URL, which I'm pretty sure prevents this from working. We can take a look, but as a workaround, use GS without proxy.
  • actually the proxy is unchecked under LAN settings.

but even when I'm at work and need to pass through the proxy, it worked perfectly so not sure why it doesn't work now.
  • No, the LAN settings are your system proxy settings — that's not what this is. The 0- is a web-based proxy that you most likely log into through your library, and proxies like those don't currently work well with Zotero Standalone, only Zotero for Firefox. But as adamsmith says, you don't need to use a proxy to access Google Scholar, so as a workaround, just access it directly.
  • Lovely!!! thanks!
  • Google Scholar translator _should_ now be able to support "0-" proxies (though I have no way of testing it). Update your translators in Zotero Standalone via Preferences -> General -> Update Now, restart Chrome and try again.
  • hi,

tried and tested - updating the translators doesn't work :(
  • Could you submit a debug log starting with clicking this link and then clicking the URL bar icon?
  • The Debug ID is D1088834088.
  • We'll need a Debug ID from Chrome, not from Standalone.
  • Debug ID is D465026632

  • Try updating one more time and check if it fixes anything. If no, then could you go into Google Scholar settings (down arrow at the top right corner of search results -> Settings) and at the bottom select "Show links to import citations into" "BibTeX". Then hit Save and try importing from Google Scholar again.

If that still does not help, can you submit another debug ID with that Google Scholar preference set. Also, right-click one of the "Import into BibTeX" links and copy the link, then paste it here.
  • Sorry, I hadn't push the update. It should be live now. Hopefully I didn't waste your time.
  • the debug id is D538292298 and D220423860.

I have tried making the change to google scholar settings to "show links to import citations into BibTex" - however, despite enabling cookies, the setting defaults back to "Don't show any citation import links". So there is no "Import into bibTex" link.

Clicking on "cite" link opens a popup which allows me to cite and gives me the option to "Import into BibTex". clicking on that take me to the following :
    http://0-scholar.google.co.za.innopac.up.ac.za/scholar.bib?q=info:zWlInzGm8aAJ:scholar.google.com/&output=citation&scisig=AAGBfm0AAAAAU9LRdMd_M454QMfU9E2ui-9hUrB640fo&scisf=4&hl=en&scircf=1

This would be an issue. Your proxy might be filtering out some cookies. Last I checked I could not find a workaround, but I'll see if we can use the new Cite feature.
  • great stuff! thanks for your help. can I ask a question on in-text citations in word - how do I change the format from for e.g.(Morar, 2012) to Morar(2012) without manually changing it?
  • You have to manually change it (by editing the citation and selecting suppress author). For unrelated questions though, please start a new thread.
  • Will do. on this issue- i fixed the issue, well kind off. I fixed the saving the reference to zotero and enabling the "show links to import citations into BibTex" by clearing my cache.

the problem is that it doesn't download the attachment as it looks for my password to for the university proxy. The debug code is D387254287.
  • The attachment part should be solved in the next Zotero release. This is a general issue when using a proxy with connectors (i.e. Chrome, Safari, Opera)
  • great stuff!!

if you don't mind - please leave this thread open for the weekend in case this happens again and the clearing of the cache doesn't work.
