Zotero icon missing

I am having a problem using the download from any website, the icons in the browser bar does not show up in any page when I have the Zotero standalone running at the same time. Only if a close zotero standalone, the icon appears in the browser bar. I am using Firefox (up to date) and everything else on zotero appears to be working correctly.
Has someone had the same problem? How can I change this?
  • could you specify which Zotero versions you're using (exact versions, not just "up to date")? This shouldn't be an issue with the current version.
  • Zotero Standalone 4.0.21.2 and Zotero pluggin 4.0.21.5. My Firefox version is 24.6.0
    Thank you for your help!
  • See if opening Firefox and Zotero in different orders makes a difference. This should work, though, but I fear various combinations with the 24.6 ESR version see the least amount of testing.
  • I'm having the same problem, although my efforts to fix it may have confused matters. I'm using Firefox 28.0, Pale Moon 24.6.2, and Zotero Standalone. I hadn't used Zotero for a while, so when I started it today I checked for updates, then updated to 4.0.21.5. I also updated the plugin in each browser to 4.0.21.5. Things work fine in Firefox, but not in Pale Moon. Initially the Zotero icon appeared in the PM URL bar, but it didn't work. When I clicked on it, a popup reported "Saving to My Library," but nothing happened - the citation didn't get saved. I tested it repeatedly on WorldCat, Amazon, and GoodReads, and it didn't work anywhere.

To try to fix matters, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Zotero plugin in PM; I've disabled and enabled it; I've started Zotero both before and after starting Pale Moon; I've copied the Zotero plugin (zotero@chnm.gmu.edu.xpi) from FF to PM; I've reset the translators; I've installed the full version of Zotero 4.0.21.5 on top of what was already installed; and finally, I completely uninstalled and reinstalled Zotero Standalone, using Revo Uninstaller to clean up any stray registry entries and files.

The situation as it currently stands in PM is this:
When I open Pale Moon first and then try to open Zotero Standalone, I get this error message: "Your Zotero database is currently in use. Only one instance of Zotero using the same database may be opened simultaneously at this time. If Firefox with the Zotero extension is open, please close it and restart Zotero Standalone." This message appears even when the Zotero extension is NOT open. Clicking on Tools>Zotero will open Zotero in the bottom half of the browser window. The Zotero icon appears in the URL bar and works.

When I try to open Zotero before Pale Moon, it opens fine, but the Zotero icon does not appear in the PM URL bar. Clicking on Tools>Zotero produces this error message: "Zotero Standalone was launched but is not accessible. If you experienced an error opening Zotero Standalone, restart Firefox."

I've spent several hours trying to figure this out, and I'm exasperated. Hopefully these error messages will help you figure out what might be wrong.
  • I should add that after clicking on the Options button for the Zotero entry in the PM Add-Ons Manager, the Zotero Preferences window flashes open briefly, then disappears before opening Zotero Standalone (or changing the focus to the Zotero Standalone main window if Zotero is already open).
  • PM is not officially supported. It's very much possible that there are problems, especially when you're also using Standalone.

Apparently you didn't notice that I'm having exactly the same problem as dany32 and on the very same verson of FF/PM. It's not likely a coincidence.

Too bad, dany32, the developers won't use the information I submitted to try to debug your problem.
  • dany32 didn't report any of the things you did - not the initial behavior of the "Saving to Zotero" bubble, nor the various error messages from Standalone. Unless s/he is able to reproduce them this is very unlikely to be the same problem. It's certainly possible that the issues are related, but since there are a fair number of people running Zotero on the regular Firefox ESR release, I'm pretty sure we'd have heard about these error messages, though, depending on how reproducible dany's issue is, not necessarily about that.

(and please keep in mind that you're getting people to reply to you on a weekend night. Insulting them might not be the best strategy if you're interested in receiving future support).

dany32 reported: "the icons in the browser bar does not show up in any page when I have the Zotero standalone running at the same time. Only if a close zotero standalone, the icon appears in the browser bar."

That's the same behavior I reported. My report was just a lot more detailed than dany32's.

I didn't expect you to reply on a weekend night. That's your choice. I also didn't insult you.
  • Anyway, as adamsmith said, we don't support Pale Moon, so we can't help you with that. If you can reproduce the problem in Firefox ESR (which is what dany32 is using — Pale Moon and Firefox are not equivalent, despite what you seemed to suggest above), we can look further.
  • I just tried opening Zotero and FF in different order, but there is no difference. Is there something else I could try out to fix the problem?
Thank you again for your support!
  • So you're saying that, no matter what, if you open Standalone, the icon stops appearing?

    What OS is this?

Are you running any security/firewall software? If so, try temporarily disabling it. Are you connecting via a proxy server?
  • Yes, if Standalone is open, the icon stopy appearing, otherwise the icon is there.
I have Windows 7 and think that no firewall is running. I will check this. The connection I have is through a proxy server.
    Thank you for your help!
  • What happens if you try to open Zotero in Firefox when Zotero Stadalone is open? Do you get an error?
  • No, I do not get an error. Everything seems to work normal, but the icon is missing...
  • So you're saying that when Zotero Standalone is open, you are able to click the "Z" (or "Zotero") icon in Firefox and open Zotero Standalone (or does Zotero pane open inside Firefox)?
  • Yes, I can "re-open" Standalone in Firefox even when Standalone is already open. The only thing missing is the icon on the browser bar to save citations. I have to close Standalone, refresh firefox webpage to see the icon again...
  • I can "re-open" Standalone in Firefox even when Standalone is already open
Sorry, this is a bit ambiguous. There's no such thing as "Standalone in Firefox". When you click the Zotero icon in Firefox you would either see a Zotero pane opening in the bottom of the Firefox screen, or you would see Zotero Standalone gain focus (which would be completely outside of Firefox)
  • Sorry, I was not clear enogh... When I click Zotero icon in Firefox I see Zotero Standalone gain focus (outside Firefox)...
  • (After I wrote all of this, I realized that there might be something easier you can do that could provide enough information. In Zotero Standalone, under the Gear menu, are you able to click "Report Errors..." and then submit the error report? Post the report ID here if you can. If "Report Errors" is grayed out, proceed with below.)

Could you provide Real-Time Debug Log from Firefox for the following steps (you can email the debug log to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread):

(Before starting Firefox with debug logging)
    1. If you don't have the setting set, in Firefox, go to Options -> General -> "When Firefox starts:" "Show my windows and tabs from last time"
    2. Open a single tab in Firefox and go to https://www.worldcat.org/title/inquiry-into-the-nature-and-causes-of-the-wealth-of-nations/oclc/167332&referer=brief_results
    3. Close Firefox
    4. Open Zotero Standalone. Under Preferences -> Advanced -> General, Enable debug output logging. Do not close the Standalone preference window.

At this point follow the real-time debug log instructions linked above. Use "-console -zoterodebug" instead of "-jsconsole -zoterodebug". Once Firefox starts and the WorldCat page stops loading, copy the contents of the debug log and email them as per above.

Also, submit the debug log from Standalone by going back to the preference window and clicking "Disable" and "Submit to Zotero Server". Post the Debug ID here.
  • I was able to create an Error report: This is the error report ID: 1228029694.

There are no errors in there, so we'd need the real-time output from Zotero for Firefox.

But, first, since you're using a proxy server, check your proxy settings — either in Firefox or, if it's set to use the system proxy settings, in the system proxy settings — to make sure that the hosts localhost and 127.0.0.1 are excluded from proxying (which they should be by default). The most likely problem is that the requests between Firefox and Standalone are being sent to the proxy, which won't work.
  • I just checked the system proxy settings and the host localhost and 127.0.0.1 are excluded from proxying...
    What should I do next?
  • We need the real-time debug output from Zotero for Firefox, which Aurimas gave you instructions for above.
  • But, FWIW, Firefox 31 is now out and is an ESR release (Pale Moon hasn't updated yet), so might as well update if you can. Also, I'm not able to reproduce this with 24.7 (the current ESR version).
