PDF attachments not synching from Zotero Server to New laptop

I have been using Zotero for about a year and have hundreds of PDF articles attached to parent items in multiple libraries. These PDFs are all in my online Zotero library and also sych fine with my PC at work. My primary computer is a home laptop.

My home laptop's hard drive crashed irreparably last week and I bought a new one (16 Meg ram). I have installed the Zotero add on and standalone version. When I synch, all the libraries, notes, and parent item data comes through fine. I can also see the attached PDFs. but when I click on them I get the message:

The attached file could not be found.

It may have been moved or deleted outside of Zotero

Per online instructions, I also tried restoring from server (https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/sync_reset_options#restore_from_server) to no avail. I then generated a debug ID D727426619 when I tried again to unsuccessfully synch.

I have purchased upgraded storage space on Zotero and am within my limit.

Can you help me?

    Also, which directions were you following that recommended restoring from server? (The ones in the linked page say Reset File Sync History)
  • Thank you. I first tried restoring from server as follows:

    "Restore from Server

    First, check your Zotero library on zotero.org to verify that it contains all of your data. To view your library, log in and then click the My Library tab.

    Next, if you have Zotero's auto-sync enabled, open the Zotero preferences without opening the Zotero pane. Go to Firefox's Tools menu, select Add-ons, and select the Extensions tab. Select Zotero in the list that appears and click the Preferences button.

    Once in the Zotero preferences, click the Sync pane and the Reset tab within that. Select “Restore from Zotero Server”, and then click the Reset button."

    This recreated all of my libraries, parent items, note attachments, but no PDFs on my computer.


    I followed then all the instructions described in

    up to the last item:
    " Sync Computer B and check if there's a sync error. If so, you'll need to resolve that before file syncing will work.

    If you've performed all these steps, see the file on the server, and still can't access the file on Computer B, then go to the Sync→Reset pane of the Zotero preferences on Computer B, choose Reset File Sync History, generate a Debug ID for the next sync attempt and an attempt to open the file, and post the Debug ID to the forums. Do not use the other options in the Reset pane. "

    For the purposes of discussion, my home laptop would be "Computer B" and my work is Computer A. They have the same settings. I can access the PDFs on the Zotero server just fine.

    I therefore generated a Debug ID D727426619. It is my understanding that I don't have to post the text of the debug to the forum, but please let me know if that is not the case.

    this did not resolve the problem.
  • Sorry for not getting back to you on this. Are you still having trouble? That debug output showed a bunch of different issues, some probably related to security software on your system.
