export "My Library" error

Hello,

I'm fairly new to zotero, but have been using it for my research group. I realized that I didn't need any articles in "My Library" and so deleted them all. Now I only have entries in the Group Library.

I noticed that when I accidentally tried to export "My Library", there's an error: "An error occurred while trying to export the selected file." When I added one entry, the export worked fine. Presumably a more helpful error message would say "Why are exporting when you have no entries in your library?" :)

  • empty collections have the right-click--> export option greyed out. I guess that could be done for "Export Library," but this seems like a _very_ rare scenario (since e.g. it doesn't affect new users who have the "Welcome to Zotero" item in their library by default), so not sure it's worth the effort.
  • how (and in which format) can you export ALL your zotero data in case you want to close your acocunt (or make a copy of it) but keep the data in some form? I am a bit worried to have to to keep all my refeences in one basket....
    Thank you for your comments.

  • that really depends on what your goal is. The richest export format is Zotero RDF, but afaik no other reference manager is able to read that format, so not sure of how much use it is for that purpose. The richest export format that's relatively widely supported is Endnote XML, but there's still a fair amount of dataloss involved in using that.

Some other reference managers (like ColWiz and Paperpile) are able to import all your Zotero data via Zotero's server API. Other reference managers, like Mendeley, are able to read data from the zotero.sqlite directly. As for the latter--note that Zotero stores all your data locally (in said sqlite), so "closing your account" doesn't actually have any effect on your ability to access your Zotero data.
  • thank you adamsmith I am, as you have understood, quite ignorant about Zotero works (although I have been using it quite a lot fro about one year now). can you tell me were the Zotero data are stored locally in my pc?...if it is a lost story just direct me to the appropriate part of zoter instructions...and thank you agian for you help :-)
