Folders sometime s appear empty when clicking between folders

Sometimes when I click away from the sub-folder I’m viewing to go to the main group library folder (top-level) sometimes there nothing in that folder. I have tried syncing again and it doesn’t affect it. This also happens (although not all the time) when I click away from the top-level folder to a subfolder. I’ve tried restarting firefox and sometimes it works for a bit and then starts doing this again, and sometimes this happens when I start it. It’s been freezing a lot too.

  • ERROR: disk I/O error
This is usually due to having the Zotero data directory on a networked drive or on a server-mirrored hard drive in a work environment. If that's the case for you, try copying your data directory to the local hard drive and pointing Zotero to that in the Advanced -> Files and Folders pane of the Zotero preferences.

This could also be due to an actual physical problem with the disk.
  • Hi Dan. Thanks. Yes, the data directory is on a networked drive but it's our only option. We use a Cloud IT system and hot desk so we log on to a different computer every day - using the local hard drive is not a possibility.
  • There's not much we can do about this, I'm afraid. Network shares can break some of the standard filesystem locking behavior that the database that Zotero uses (SQLite) relies on. While lots of software uses SQLite, we use a locking mode that prevents database corruption from accidental simultaneous access (say, from Zotero for Firefox and Standalone), and that mode requires some additional filesystem capabilities, which is why you might not see this with other software.

Your IT folks may be able to experiment and make adjustments to fix this, but for Zotero's part it just expects standard filesystem behavior.
  • Ok thanks, I'll pass that on
