I cannot get references in word from zotero

I hope someone can really help me on this one. I work in an office which will not allow me to install any software on my pc. I tried using zotero from the web but I cannot get my articles references even though I can see them in the webpage. So on my laptop at home, I am able to use the insert citation bar to insert multiple citations with page numbers for each citation with the standalone. Now that I'm in the office without the standalone, can't I still use the website that shows my papers to insert the citations just as I could do with the standalone?

Someone help!
  • sorry, you can't use the Zotero Word add-on without installing software. You could see if your office let's you install the Firefox add-on--many common security settings allow you to install browser add-ons. If you don't have Firefox, of course, you're out of luck.
  • It may actually be possible to use a portable Firefox (maybe even standalone) installation and load the Zotero word add-in manually. I'll have to mess around with this later today to provide detailed instructions.
  • Thanks for your reply adamsmith. I am able to install the ff add-on but my problem is if I open a word document, i am unable to insert the citations from the zotero-on-the-web; works perfectly with standalone.

I hope i made myself clear.

    Awaiting your kind assistance.
  • It's not possible to insert citations from Zotero.org (the website). You need to have Zotero installed either as a Firefox add-on or as Zotero Standalone
  • Tnx but I have zotero as an add-on in firefox and still cannot get the citations in the word doc.
  • So what happens when you try?
  • I get the citation bar but when i try entering a name to lookup it does not seem to automatically pick the possible names up as it does in standalone. So i tried clicking the z in the citation tool to allow me manually pick multiple citations, and it took me to the new window where i could select which papers i want to select. But i don't see any of my papers/folders, even though i can see my papers/folders in zotero.org.
  • Ok, so in your Zotero Firefox extension, do you have anything in your library? If not, you need to sync. As I said before, you cannot insert items from Zotero.org
  • OK. So i need to have standalone in order to insert stuff in word? Someone was telling me i could insert citations without standalone
  • In Firefox, press Ctrl+Shift+Z There will be a pane that opens up at the bottom. That's the fully functioning version of Zotero inside Firefox (same as Standalone)
  • I did that but returned nothing
  • What does "returned nothing" mean? As in the pane did not open up? Make sure you don't have the cursor in a textbox anywhere (i.e. click somewhere else on the page) before pressing Ctrl+Shift+Z You can also look for a Zotero icon at the top right of the Firefox window (may have to go into the Firefox menu and click customize)

If bone off that helps, make sure Zotero extension is installed and listed under Firefox add-ons
  • Thanks all those who helped. I got it done. SO what I did was to get 2 things done to be able to insert citations from my papers stored on zotero.org without having to install the stand alone. first, install the firefox extension. second, install the word plug-in. then i was able to ctrl+shift+z to get the standalone open up in the lower half of the page. i was able to pull citations into the word doc from the web.

    happy!
  • you're misunderstanding what's happening, though.
You're not "pulling citations from the web." Zotero for Firefox is pretty much the same thing as Zotero Standalone. It's no more "online" and stores all data locally.
What you did was to sync your online account to the local copy of Zotero - Zotero for Firefox in this case. You also don't need to pull citations into Word, you can use the Word add-on just like you would with Standalone (and if you're just pulling citations into Word you don't need the Word add-on).
  • Hi all,
Could you please help me with my question: When I cited all my references in word doc then I saved the word file. Today, I opened the word file to add some citation, but it appeared there is no bibo list of references. What I have tried to insert the references that already cited in the text (i.e for example [1], [2-6] and so on), why the references list disappeard and why when I want to insert it the message appeared " cite first"?
    Thank you inadvance
