file not found

Hi guys,

I know there's been a lot posted on this and sorry if the answer is obvious but after reading older posts I don't want to mess it up.

I recently had to restore my computer from back up and restored zotero from server. When I try to access PDFs through Zotero it tells me 'file not found'. When I try to cite in word it tells me 'integration error'.

When I try to locate the file t opens the right directory, i.e the files are in the right library and on my computer but somehow zotero can't bring them up?

Any advise would be very welcome, I have no idea what I'm doing!

Cheers,

Your sync history shows a recent full download sync for your account, which suggests that you didn't actually do the restore from backup properly.

Provide a Debug ID for an attempt to open a missing file and we can take a look.

Oh, sorry — I misread. You restored from the server rather than a backup.

So, anyway, still generate the Debug ID and we can see what's up.
  • Thanks for a prompt reply and your help Dan. I've submitted the Debug ID as requested!

You need to post it here for us to be able to look at it.
After uploading the output, Zotero will provide a Debug ID that you can post to the forums. There's no need to post the actual debug output.
  • Sorry, I haven't had coffee yet.

    The Debug ID is D768533711.

Attachment file '/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/2s8qxdy8.default/zotero/storage/4GC46CSW/[...].pdf' not found
Um, so first of all, how did your Firefox profile end up under the /Library folder? It's supposed to be under the /Users/:username:/Library folder. (If you start moving things around, disable auto-sync temporarily first.)

In any case, that's where Zotero is looking for the PDF, so check that folder to see if there's a PDF. That file exists on the server, though — you should be able to verify that yourself — so the Files Not Syncing steps would apply.

But the first thing would be to straighten out the directory you're using (though that shouldn't technically make a difference for this).
  • Hi Dan,

I have absolutely no idea how that happened. If I change it to the user profile directory however what happens is that it shows me the normal path to find the files but my Library icon in my username on my mac is transparent! Could this be the problem?

I'm not quite sure what you mean here.
  • Sorry. That my firefox profile appears to be in two different locations, including /Users/:username:/Library folder. However when I click to see the data directory in my Finder, the library folder (/Users/:username:/Library) is displayed as a ghost/seethrough folder. If I open my finder it is simply not there.

    Does this make more sense?

is displayed as a ghost/seethrough folder
Displayed where? In the Zotero preferences? That's just a read-only field — all paths would show up the same way.

As for Finder, the /Users/:username:/Library folder is hidden by default in recent versions of OS X. Hold down Option when clicking the Go menu and you can access it.
  • Oh ok. Sorry again.

So going back to the initial problem, should I do a sync attempt following the steps from Files Not Syncing and provide you with a debug ID or that?
  • dstillman Zotero Team
Well first you want to move your Zotero data directory into the correct location in the Firefox profile within your home directory (or somewhere else in your home directory if you use a custom location — just not underneath /Library). It's not clear to me if you've done that.

But once that's all set and you see your library in Zotero, follow the steps in Files Not Syncing.
  • Ok, thanks Dan.
  • Hi Dan,

I moved the data directory, reset file synch history and when I tried to synch to generate a report ID for you all the remaining documents from Zotero folder successfully downloaded to my computer. So that's great, thanks.

I am still getting an error with word however. 'Zotero integration error. Zotero could not load the component required to communicate with your word processor. Please ensure that the appropriate extension is installed and try again.'

Zotero Word for Mac Integration 3.5.7 is enabled

    The Debug ID is D1841498247.

    Thanks for your patience.

  • Try reinstalling the plugin via Preferences -> Cite -> Word Processor
  • Fantastic. All working like a charm again.

    Thanks both!
