Word wrap/automatic line breaks in Notes (TinyMCE text editor)

Dear all,

So far, I have used other programs for notetaking (namely MS Word) and employed Zotero for citations only. I would now like to change that and start entering my notes in Zotero Standalone; this way, I would have all my work related data in one place, not to mention conveniently and safely synced on the Zotero servers.

I do not demand much from my word processors, and I have no qualms about Zotero using a barebones program such as the TinyMCE HTML editor. However, there is one thing that really bugs me: from what I understand, there is no option for "word wrap" i.e. have automatic line breaks in the editor: unless I hit enter, my line will go on indefinitely and I have to horizontally scroll the window to see all of it.

Now, this is a major annoyance - especially so when using bullet points, when pressing enter just creates a new bullet point instead of breaking the line. Also, anyone who has taken an intro level computer course on word processing knows that hitting enter is not the correct way to create line breaks (it is actually for splitting paragraphs.) So, instead of neatly wrapping my lines into a single paragraph, using enter for line breaks actually creates multiple single line paragraphs, which greatly limits the "pasteability" of my Zotero notes into other text editors.

I have done multiple searches on this issue both here and on Google, to no avail. Am I totally daft or does the inbuilt text editor really lack a Word Wrap feature? If not, could someone kindly tell me how to enable it?

Interestingly, the editor automatically recognizes and incorporates line breaks when pasting text from an existing Word document, but does not do so for newly entered text.
  • Odd. Which Zotero version, which OS? I have line breaks in every conceivable way I can take notes (separate window or not, HTML mode or not) in Zotero. I completely agree that word wrap is indispensable.
  • Dear adamsmith,

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm using Zotero 4.0.20 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
  • You're saying that if you create a completely new note and start typing text, it will extend off the right side of the pane? Can you take a screenshot of that, upload it somewhere (Dropbox, imgur, etc.), and post a link here? And then click the HTML button, copy the raw HTML, and paste it here. Be sure to set Text mode for your post.
  • Dan, that is exactly what I meant. However,I just reinstalled Zotero (something I should've started with) and the problem seems to have fixed itself. Now, word wrap works like charm, and horizontal scrolling occurs only if I enter one long uninterrupted line of characters.
