Unable to save from JSTOR

For the past couple of weeks, I have been unable to save citations from JSTOR. I upgraded Zotero, and no change. I am using version 4.0.19, and Safari. The error message I get is: An error occurred while saving this item. Check Known Translator Issues for more information.

I enabled the debug output, and received the following debug ID: D1166475400

What can I do?
  • See Troubleshooting Translator Issues, particularly the part about cookies.
  • Thanks for the quick reply, Dan. Yes, I have Safari set to accept all cookies. And JSTOR is the only site for which Zotero doesn't work. It seems to work fine for the other major academic repositories. It is unfortunate that JSTOR is the one I need to use 90% of the time. Any other ideas?
  • Example URL?

Also, can you provide a Debug ID from Standalone for the save?
  • Er, sorry, from Safari?
  • Example URL: http://www.jstor.org.proxy2.cl.msu.edu/stable/749740?seq=2&uid=3739256&uid=2134&uid=2&uid=70&uid=4&sid=21103961383753

Other than the debug ID I provided in the first post, I can't get another. I right-click on the screen in JSTOR to bring up Zotero connector preferences. I check the box next to Enable Logging. I immediately try to save a file from JSTOR. I get the error message. I go into Zotero preferences again, and click "Submit to Zotero Server". The button grays out for a second, but nothing happens.
  • Well, you're having precisely the same problems as in this thread, for what it's worth.

But if you can't submit the debug output (which may suggest a problem with your network/proxy, since it didn't work for the other MSU user either) you can click View Output, save the output to a text file, and email it to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread.
  • Thanks, Dan. I'll give that a try.
  • Nope, I can't "View Output" either. When I click that button, it grays out for a second, but nothing happens. It says that there are 32 lines logged, but I can't do anything with that data.
  • View Output doesn't actually work for me either at the moment, though I can submit output. I've asked Simon to look into this — stay tuned.
  • Hi Dan,

I've been "staying tuned" all month. Did you ever hear back from Simon? I'm just about ready to switch to using Mendeley. I hate to transfer all of my hundreds of records, but JSTOR is valuable enough that I will do so.
  • Sorry for the delay. I've asked Simon again to take a look at this.
  • I'd note, though, that as a workaround for JSTOR you could simply use Zotero for Firefox, which will share your existing data directory by default. You just need to close Standalone and Zotero for Firefox will load in full mode. Zotero for Firefox generally isn't susceptible to these sorts of proxy issues.
  • @Dan - is viewing output still broken? Is that Mac specific?

I think Simon fixed it, but he hasn't released a new version of the connector with the change.
  • that'd be good to release anyway: there are a number of fixes that would be really nice to finally have, for character encoding of imported RIS that's not utf-8.
  • The new connector versions were released a couple weeks ago. edwardsccs, if you're still having trouble with the new version (4.0.21), you can try the steps above for providing debug output.
