Can't open Zotero Standalone on Windows 8

I can no longer open Zotero Standalone on Windows 8.
If I try to open the executable jar file via the command line, I get this message: "invalid or corrupted jar file "C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero Standalone\zotero.jar"

Can anyone help?

Thanks very much in advance

Silvia
  • I cannot open it either. It seems it's about to get zotero standalone opened but then it doesn't open it. I've tried to follow the instruction of the link you sent but once I "Select the "zotero.exe" file and click Open" I do not see anything happen.

    Any idea why?
  • did you select it from the "Run" menu via browse? It should pretty definitely display the file path.
  • I've tried in two ways, both with no success:

    (1) I selected from the windows start menu "Run" and then insert the path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero Standalone\ . Then a window opens and I see the Zotero.exe file which I fail to open
    (2) I insert the path on the browser directly.

In both cases, once I select "open" to open the zotero.exe file, nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong?
  • did you add -jsconsole after the filepath?
  • I am sorry, should I insert the path like this then? " C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero Standalone\zotero.exe jsconsole ". If that is the case, I get no reaction. Anyway I thought -jsconsole had to be added after I open the zotero.exe - but I cannot open it.
  • it should be
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero Standalone\zotero.exe -jsconsole
    (note the hyphen)
assuming that's the file to zotero.exe
  • Unfortunately I've tried with C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero Standalone\zotero.exe -jsconsole . It seems it's about to open something (the circle is turning) but in the end nothing gets open.
  • Dan or aurimas would know more about what to expect when running from the console in Windows, but you could also just try re-installing. Make sure you have a back-up of your database (though you shouldn't need it) https://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data#backing_up_your_zotero_library
don't bother to de-install - just re-install Zotero Standalone, see if that helps. If it doesn't post back here and someone who knows more about Windows than me will have advice on how to continue troubleshooting.
  • Are you putting quotes around the path to Zotero? (Not including -jsconsole) you should
  • Thanks adamsmith for your suggestion.
Aurimas, I have just tried with "C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero Standalone\zotero.exe". It seems it's about to upload something (the circle is turning) but, in the end, nothing happens.
Really don't know what to do. :(
  • to clarify—did you try re-installing?
  • No, I have not yet tried re-installing. I have just backed up the folder since I have quite a lot of articles in there. I was wondering though, since my Standalone is sync with Zotero online, shall I unlink it? I am afraid that if I re-install the standalone, the sync will erase my Zotero file online. Would that be the case?
  • no, don't worry about that, your online library is safe.

To be clear, I meant that the quotes should be around the path and not encompass -jsconsole flag. You still need to supply the -jsconsole flag after the quotes. So
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero Standalone\zotero.exe" -jsconsole
  • Also try typing in cmd first and pressing enter. Then type in the above command in the window that opens. You would be able to see any errors that occur before Zotero gets a chance to start.

Also, don't know what you mean by "upload" above. Are you able to start Zotero?
