Word Plugin Installation does not work

I am Running Windows 7 professional and MS Office 2013 and have installed Zotero in Firefox 28.0 and the plugin appeared as promised.

I tried installing the MS Word plugin from
https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_installation
but I got the error:
Zotero Word for Windows integration could not be installed because Firefox cannot modify the needed file

I tried downloading the pluin separately and open it directly with the browser closed with the same effect.

Upgraded to Firefox 29.0
Same Error:
Zotero Word for Windows integration could not be installed because Firefox cannot modify the needed file

Does anyone have a solution?

Regards,
Peter
  • This likely means that you have security software that's preventing Firefox from accessing the Word startup directory. If you're running security software, try temporarily disabling it. If not, or if you can't, you can manually install the Zotero.dot file.

Thanks Dan for trying to help!

Tried deactivation Norton - not working

    I tried to find:
In your Firefox/Zotero profile open the folder extensions/zoteroWinWordIntegration@zotero.org/install, where you you can find a copy of the file Zotero.dot

    but zoteroWinWordIntegration@zotero.org
    and
    Zotero.dot
do not exist so I can't manually install the Zotero.dot
  • what folder are in your Firefox profile folder? If the add-on shows up as installed in Firefox (does it?) the folder should definitely be there.
  • C:\Users\Peter\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\y7iasl9c.default\zotero

But there is no such folder with a file Zotero.dot....
  • that's the Zotero data folder, which is different for the Firefox profile folder (I know, it's confusing).
    Go up one level to
    C:\Users\Peter\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\y7iasl9c.default

there you'll find a folder "extensions" --> open that. that's where you'll find zoteroWinWordIntegration@zotero.org, which in turn should contain Zotero.dot
  • sorry to give a solution partially in portuguese, I don't know all the file names in English (someone please help).
    here's how I did it:
Open Word 2013, click on "file" tab, then "options" on the left menu
search for "suplementos" in the left menu (name in portuguese, do not know the translation in English)
search for "gerenciar" (something like "manage"), in the right box, last line with a dialog box saying "suplementos de COM" as default
change dialog box to "modelos" and click "ir" (="go")
a box opens; the second space of this box is "modelos e suplemntos globais" - click "adicionar" (="add")
search for "zotero.dot" at the "AppData" folder as described in the troubleshooting page <www.zotero.org/support/windows_word_plugin_manual_installation_instructions>
    click "abrir" (="open")
an additional tab "suplementos" should appear in word 2013 at the extreme right; in it the traditional zotero icons should appear

    Hope it helps!

Error installing Zotero on Firefox for Word X on Mac

    Message as follows:
"Installation could not be completed because an error occurred.

MacBook running OS 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, Firefox 29.0.1, Word X for Mac, Zotero 4.0 for Mac, & Zotero 4.0 for Firefox.
  • that error means what it says. Word X is not supported by Zotero and never has been.

but it works on my MBPro running Mavericks...
with the self-same copy of MS Office X that's on both machines.
  • I doubt that's with Word X
  • Works on the MacMini Mavericks, works on the MBPro Mavericks, not on the MB Snow Leopard.

PowerPC programs haven't run on OS X since Snow Leopard, so there's no way you're running Word X on Mavericks. It would have to be Word 2008 or 2011, both of which are supported. Word X (which came out in 2001) isn't.
  • Ah, that's exactly what it is. When I reinstalled the software I installed the old PowerPC version instead of Office 2008. I will first fix that!
  • Still having problems with installing Word add on.

I have reinstalled the latest version of Zotero on Firefox and have tried to reinstall Word add on, but I have Norton on my computer. I have also tried the suggestions above.

Here is the message I get:
Zotero could not load the component required to communicate with your word processor. Please ensure that the appropriate extension is installed and try again.
