Zotero says this citation no longer exists should i delete it?

but the citation DOES exist.

what to do? it wants to go through my entire document and remove all the zotero citations. there are 50. i really don't want to put them back in.

firefox 3.0.3, zotero 1.0.7
word 2007 in compatability mode for 2003 doc but error persists when i save as 2007 doc.
thanks

  • Are you using the document with the same library you started with (and not an imported/exported one)? Have you deleted any items (including duplicate items) in Zotero?
  • Ok, i just did some more reading on the site, I recently was forced to get a new computer, and i see that it seems when i transfer my library and my documents to my new computer they will not work together anymore.

is there any workaround for this? ie working on a flash drive? and more importantly, how soon will you address this issue? I am finishing up my dissertation, and if i can not export my documents and my library with out this issue, i will have to seek another reference software- which would be sad, because i like zotero way better than endnote!
  • Transferring your library to another computer will work fine as long as you use the recommended method.

There are a number of ways to use Zotero 1.0 on multiple machines, including using a custom data directory location on a flash drive or using Firefox Portable. Zotero 1.5 will offer native syncing between multiple machines.

We also plan to address this limitation of the word processor plugins (which is related to the ability for multiple people with different libraries to work on the same document) in the near future.
  • Also, I am Windows XP (downgrade in case that matters)
  • Hi Dan,

That worked, thanks. I had previously used the export tool under the gear icon. im excited to see the changes coming for zotero 1.5- you totally rock.

fyi, the directions under "recommended method" leave out that the advanced icon is under preferences. just thought id let you know.

    thanks!
  • It says that it's in the Zotero preferences:
You can locate your Zotero data by going to the Zotero preferences under the Actions (gear icon) menu and clicking “Show data directory” in the Advanced pane.
  • Having read through numerous forum posts when suffering the same problem as Marple06, Dan's post here was really useful. However, solving this problem seesm to have highlighted the current limitations of using zotero on more than 1 computer. Is my understanding (below) of what I need to do in order to be able to use Zotero two computers correct?

I've set up my office and home computer with Zotero and have copied my library using the recommended method that Dan has hyperlinked above. Am I correct in thinking that in order to be able to work on the same documents on either computer, I'll have to repeat the process of copying the entire library across to the other computer each time I add even a single new reference to Zotero on the first computer? This seems far more unwieldy than just being able to export the new references across but is the only way I can think of retaining functionality for the word plugin.

Is there an easier way of dealing with this? I was using firefox portable for a while, but the comp tech guy at work suggested that this would not be as reliable as the method I have outlined above.

    Thanks

Using Firefox Portable isn't necessary—you can just set the Zotero data directory to a custom location on a flash drive (via the Advanced pane of the Zotero preferences). You'll still want to make daily backups of the data directory onto another drive.
