  • Dan will have to look at that, but it looks like it may be a permission issue on your operating system, i.e. Zotero is not able to access a file because Windows blocks access.
  • Usually that's due to either security software or permissions. If you're running security software, try temporarily disabling it. If you're not, make sure your user account has write permissions to your entire Zotero data directory and that it's not set to read-only.

Or just sync through Standalone if that works. Security software is more likely to interfere with Firefox than Standalone.
  • Thanks for your help. I'm not sure how to disable my security software, but I can try to figure it out. I use avast. Do I have to disable it every time I need to sync materials?
  • for a start you'd just want to try if that fixes things. If it does, there's a good chance you can add an exception for Zotero. But especially since you're on windows, there's a good chance it's a straight file permission issue.
  • "...make sure your user account has write permissions to your entire Zotero data directory and that it's not set to read-only." How do I go about making sure the directory is not read-only?
  • Open up the data directory, go into 'storage' folder and try creating a text file. (right-click -> New -> Text Document) If you can, everything should be ok. Also, make sure you have all of your PDFs closed when you're syncing. If that doesn't help, try syncing immediately after restarting your computer.
  • I was able to create a text document just fine. So the issue is my security software. I flagged Zotero as a "false positive" and the program said it would review the request when the next update occurs.

Is this issue likely the reason why I am still having problems using Zotero in my word documents? I am editing a paper in review mode (track changes) and the footnotes keep on saying that the Field Code has Changed on footnotes I already had in the paper. When I try to reject or accept the change, the bibliographical footnote changes into a page-long entry.

the track changes issue is separate and I don't think it can be avoided easily. I'd accept those changes in bunch at the end. The expanded field code view of footnotes can be toggled using alt+F9.

The false positive report is not going to help. That's for actual virus detection false positives. It's more likely that one of the avast features - some type of "guard" prevents this. The way to test this is really to temporarily disable _all_ avast features and then try to sync.
  • I disabled avast and now the firefox pane is syncing successfully.

The track changes problem and the firefox problem appear to be connected because I was able to accept those changes without issues.

Thanks a lot for your help, adamsmith and aurimas. I really appreciate it.
  • You don't need to keep Avast disabled. I don't use it, but you should be able to set an exception for a directory (your Zotero data directory) in Avast settings.
