zotero says there was an error in starting

  • What error, specifically, and doing what? There are a few in your error report, most just saying that you've exceeded your file sync quota.

You should also upgrade to Zotero 4.0.19, since you're still on 4.0.17.
  • Hi Dan,

    thank you for your reply.
I updated and it works now - still have the issue with the storage quota though, which I need to solve.

    I have another question:
How can I get rid of the zotero plugin (window at the bottom) in firefox without loosing the option of adding to my zotero (standalone) archive via zotero.
Currently I have the add-ons Zotero 4.0.19 and Zotfile 3.1 installed.
If I add an item on google scholar for example, it is only showing up in my Zotero window on firefox (which I dont need) but not in my standalone library.

    Help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

Storage quota: that message means what it says: You either need to buy more storage or disable file syncing from the sync tab of the Zotero preferences.

you can't get rid of it and still use Zotero, but the database of the Standalone and Firefox version should be shared.
    See here:

Well, sort of depends on what you mean by "get rid". If you jut want to hide the Zotero icon, then you can change that in Zotero preferences under General tab.

Edit: but also, as per the link above, if you have this configured correctly, you should not be able to open Zotero pane in Firefox is Standalone is open.
  • Great! it worked! thanks so much! I was able to set up my standalone as the standard database!
  • There seams to be a more persistent bug in my zotero: I just noticed that when trying to insert a citation in word - even though the zotero tool bar appears properly - it tells me: Word could not communicate with Zotero. Please ensure that Firefox is open and try again.

Yes. Firefox is open. Already restarted everything a few times.....

    Help is greatly appreciated.
  • Do you have the word processor integration Firefox extension installed and enabled in Firefox?

Also, the error message still says "Firefox", but it really means either Zotero Standalone or Firefox with Zotero for Firefox and the word progress integration extension. Standalone comes with the word processor component bundled. If Standalone is closed and you're viewing your full library in Zotero for Firefox, you need to make sure you've installed the integration extension there (or just start Standalone before working in Word).
  • Hi Dan,

I had the word processor integration installed when I got the error message! I just deleted it and installed it again and now it worked!

    Thanks a lot!
    I really appreciate your help!
  • I have another question concerning citations with page numbers:
    I have Word 2011 on my mac and the word processor integration installed;
When I go to Classic View to add a page number into my citation it will not show up before - it used to do though, some time ago... If I want to edit the citation, the page number shows up again - but not in the word document.
    How could this be solved?

    Thank you!
  • sorry, I don't follow where the page number appear/don't appear. Could you give use a step-by-step?
  • Sorry about not being more precise!

So I am using Mord 2011, Mac.
I have the Zotero word processor installed.

I want to insert a quote reference in my word text:
1.I click on 'Zotero insert citation'.
    2.I go to 'Classic View'.
    3. I choose my citation source.
    4. On the bottom right of the 'Add/Edit citation' window of Zotero I enter the page number of my quote.

Up until recently what I received upon pressing 'enter' is something like
(Smith 2011: 7) - indicating my entry for page 7.

Now I only get (Smith 2011).

If I go to 'Edit Citation' my entry for the page number (eg.7) still shows up - so it just does not show up in the citation in my text as it used to.

I hope that illustrates the issue.

    Thank you.
  • which citation style?
  • always the same.
It is a style created by our institute.
  • I'd have to see the citation style to say more. I've never heard of this as an issue, so the custom citation style is the most likely issue.
