Automatic Import of RIS/Refer files to Zotero Option is Missing

Hello,

I'm using Zotero Standalone on a Win 7 system and I don't have the above option in my General preferences tab.

A search on this issue in the forums is revealing contradictory information. One support reply on a thread says that Standalone doesn't have the option to automatically import ris/refer files to Zotero, and a couple of users have mentioned that they do have this option and they're using Standalone Windows 7 OS.

It's quite time-consuming to export to a ris/refer file and then importing it into Zotero, and it would be ideal if Zotero would pull them automatically. Can someone help here?

(So, to summarize, if you're not using Firefox — with or without Standalone — you won't have that option and will have to rely on opening RIS/Refer files into Standalone via the browser the way you would any document and designated application.)
  • HI Dan,

Yes, I've seen that post, it's the one that I was referring to in the original post but then other users, in the course of their query, mentioned using Standalone and that option is available. Your response confirms that it is indeed gone.

Are there any plans to introduce this in Standalone?
  • It's not gone. It never existed. See above.
  • Sorry, not gone, never existed.

Are there any plans to introduce the feature?

It's a technical restriction. Simon knows better, but I think we might be able to support it now in Chrome. I don't think Safari allows us to (though that wouldn't concern you on Windows).

But note that this still shouldn't be difficult. Zotero should be the default handler for RIS/Refer files, and you should be able to configure your browser to open those files in Standalone automatically.
  • Okay, thanks for your replies!
  • also, which page is this? Ideally, downloading RIS files should be very rare in the first place.
  • It comes up fairly often, with a couple of databases. I'll post them here when it happens again.

I use Chrome, so I'd need to dig around a bit to find out how to change the settings.
  • Here I got the last couple:

    %0 Journal Article
    %T Collaborative or cooperative learning
    %A McInnerney, Joanne M
    %A Roberts, Tim S
%J Online collaborative learning: Theory and practice
    %P 203-214
    %D 2004
    %I IGI Global Hershey, PA

Ingram, A. L., & Hathorn, L. G. (2004). Methods for analyzing collaboration in online. Online Collaborative Learning: Theory and Practice, 215–241.

There's been more, but I've been clearing them out as I've been looking.
  • but the question is - which page are you getting this from? (I'll also note that it's wrong: this isn't a journal article but an excerpt (chapter?) from a book).
  • I think the first is IGI Global. Would have to search for the other one but it's late here.
  • So if I go to the IGI Global page to that chapter:
    http://www.igi-global.com/chapter/collaborative-cooperative-learning/27723

I do get a URL bar icon that does import the citation info for the book correctly. It doesn't, however, include the chapter info, which is included in the EndNote export (which doesn't look anything like what you posted, though, so I'm wondering if we're looking at the same page).
Anyway - I'd be happy to try to help you come up with a better workflow, but I'd need more details, including full URLs where you're trying to import from.
  • Hi,

Just to let you know I'll get back to this - working under the pump on my project here :)
