Zotero doesnt recognize citations on mac

Hi,

Ive been using zotero on windows, word 2003 where ive been working on a paper that noa has 120 citations. Now i got a new macbook where i installed zotero and successfully -more or less- synced my libraty.
The really big problem is that now when i open the paper in word the zotero plugin doesnt recognize any of its citations.
It will insert new ones, thats working just fine, but the old cites are just "text" to it.
I really need to get this to work though- any suggestions anyone?
Thatd be great :) thanks
  • First, in Document Preferences (in Word, the gear button), for troubleshooting, make sure you're using Fields and not Bookmarks. Now, try pressing Alt+F9 (press it again to undo).

You should notice that the new citations you insert will turn into large blocks of code. The old citations should do the same thing, but I suspect that they will not change. If that is the case, then at some point you probably used the "Remove Codes" button, which turns live citations into plain text. Alternatively, you may have saved the document in a format that does not support field codes (e.g. RTF). Unfortunately, neither of these actions is reversible, so the only way to retrieve the old citations is to find an older backup of the document that still has field codes. Otherwise, you would have to re-insert the citations.
  • Thanks for the info-
Ill try the alt&f9 but i never saved the paper in another format than doc and now docx.
And i definitely never did anything to remove the codes!
On my old pc the citations&zotero still "communicate" and all i did was transfer it to thd new mac.
So theoretically zotero should recognize the citations, because if it geberally didnt it could never be used to share / work on papers between different computers, right?
  • This certainly _should_ work. If you were getting errors about citations no longer being present in your library, then this would indicate a problem with the way you synced/transferred Zotero. Since you're saying that the citations are plain text (I assume you're concluding this by positioning your cursor on a citation and clicking Edit Citation, which would then tell you "You must place the cursor in a Zotero citation to edit it"), then something happened to your document. If it is still working on the old computer, then I would just copy the document again from the other computer. You can also see how the current document behaves on the old computer.
  • hi, thank you SO MUCH for your help!!!
i figured it out, it was pretty easy (and obvious) in the end, but it wasnt until i read your "something happened to your document" that i made the connection:
right after i got my mac, before i had office installed, i opened the doc in pages and then saved it. and thats where the "happening" must have happened....
i now opened the one that i transferred without pages-stopover and everythings working perfectly.
thank you VERY MUCH, im so happy its sorted out!!!
