Different library contents on Zotero.org and in Firefox add-on, files not saved in libraries

Although synced, the library contents on both places are different. Also, I am unable to save files using the icon in the URL bar. A message appears BEFORE I click on the OK button saying that it is being saved; however, the files do not show in any of the libraries (zotero.org and add-on). I would appreciate immediate feedback, since I have assignments riding on getting this right.
  • Hi Dan,
The sync took a while last night, but it finished. I see blue dots next to files, not green or red. Q: If I log in to my account, how do I know which account I am logged onto? I am using the same user name or email and password. However, this may be a key to fixing the issue, since I was invited to a group.

The linked page doesn't say anything about green or red dots — the sync icon in the toolbar is green, and the sync error icon that appears to the left of it when there's a problem is red. What you're describing are the attachment file indicators in the items list, which tell you whether an attachment's associated file is present. Those aren't really related to data syncing — they're just about file syncing.
If I log in to my account, how do I know which account I am logged onto?
It says at the top of every page.
However, this may be a key to fixing the issue, since I was invited to a group.
I'm not totally sure how this is related — you'd have to provide more details on where exactly you're looking and what you're seeing that's different.

In any case, in the account you're currently logged into you have only 13 total items (including child items), and in the one group you belong to there are no items.
  • Hello Dan,
About the blue dots, I was referring to the error that would appear in red. BTW, thank you for such awesome service! I checked, and I am on the same account, so that is not the issue. A discrepancy is that I see only 5 items and not 13 items.
What I am trying to do is to select several files from the zotero icon in the URL while on Google Scholar. I am searching "mobile learning." When I check the boxes, a message on the right bottom of the screen says that it is saving it to my library. Oddly, the message appears BEFORE I even click the "OK" button and the files do NOT transfer over. Furthermore, when I select a file that has a PDF, the PDF does not transfer over. I hope this helps with clarifying my issues.
    Thank you,
    Colleen
  • A discrepancy is that I see only 5 items and not 13 items.
No, it's 13 total items — including child items — so that's not the issue. You have 7 top-level items in your online library.
Oddly, the message appears BEFORE I even click the "OK" button
That doesn't mean anything — that just appears while it's showing you the list of items to choose from on pages with multiple options.

    Please start here: http://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs
  • Here is the Report ID: 597548950
  • (For others, this is Firefox.)
  • I am sorry to report that the link was not helpful. I do not have a stand alone version, and I don't know how else to explain my issue. The Report ID showed an issue with Java, but Java is installed. I have the latest version of Zotero plug-ins. Why can I not select multiple files to Zotero? Why do PDF files not follow full-text files? Here is an example of what I am doing:
    1. go to Google Scholar
    2. add a library
    3. search for a topic
    4. select a full-text source
    5. select zotero icon in URL to save to library
    -PDF does not follow
    6. search for same topic in Google Scholar
    7. select zotero folder icon in URL
    8. select 3 sources
message says it is saving, but doesn't
    ...back to square one
    PLEASE ASSIST
  • Please don't use all-caps. It's seen as shouting.

The link wasn't supposed to fix anything — it was to tell you how to describe the problem such that we actually might be able to help you. And as it says, you need to provide steps to reproduce, with exact text you see on screen. For example, I have no idea what you mean by "PDF does not follow".

But to make things easier, can you provide a Debug ID (not Report ID) for a save attempt?
  • So sorry, Dan. I don't mean to shout at you. A debug ID was sent.
  • After uploading the output, Zotero will provide a Debug ID that you can post to the forums.
  • The Debug ID is D1653754581.
  • That doesn't cover a save attempt. Reread the instructions.
  • Pardon me--I didn't know I was try to cover a save attempt. What instructions do you want me to reread? The one to get a Debug ID?
  • I notice that my locate arrow leads to "view online, library lookup, and google scholar search" only. Could this be why PDFs cannot be added to the library?
  • Here are the instructions:

    1. Open the Advanced pane of the Zotero preferences. You can access the Zotero preferences from the gear menu in the Zotero toolbar. (In Zotero for Firefox, you can also access the Zotero preferences via the Firefox preferences.)= done

    2. Click “Enable” under Debug Output Logging.= done
Immediately perform the relevant action (syncing, saving, importing, etc.). = what relevant action do I need to do?

    3. Before doing anything else, click “Submit to Zotero Server” in the Advanced pane of the preferences. After uploading the output, Zotero will provide a Debug ID that you can post to the forums. There's no need to post the actual debug output.= done

    4. Disable debug output logging and click “Clear Output”. = done

I believe I followed the directions.
  • no, don't worry about the locate button, that's unrelated.
Provide the debug ID for an attempt to import items from google scholar as directed by Dan.
You can provide a second debug ID for a page with a full text PDF that doesn't attach.
  • OK, what's the debug ID?
  • This is what I posted earlier, but Dan said something was wrong.

    The Debug ID is D1653754581.
  • OK, look at the instructions again:
Immediately perform the relevant action (syncing, saving, importing, etc.). = what relevant action do I need to do?
that's what you're not doing. After enabling debug you need to do whatever isn't working - if I understand you correctly try to save some results from google scholar.

From what you're seeing, though, my guess would be that step 7 here applies:

  • That was it! All I needed to do was to go to Tools in Firefox > Options > Firefox will "remember history." The solution was that simple. Thanks, Adam :)
