Endless syncing and attached files not uploaded

Hello,

I have trouble in Zotero Standalone 4.0.17 with file syncing since a few weeks. New reference are syncing but not new attached files (pdf).

The green arrow is always spinning, but attached files are not uploaded on Zotero server.

It shouldn't be a storage problem... I tried to reset the syncing history, but I've still the same problem.

Here are 2 reports ID : 1272910146 and 1252545814

By the way, I've noticed that I have many duplicate files (pdf) in my storage folder which don't appear in Zotero... I tried to manually delete them yestearday... hope the report ID is not related to this !

Thank in advance for advice and help.
  • Unexpected status code 307 for request 0/D266WX9K in Zotero.Sync.Storage.ZFS.downloadFile()
Can you restart Zotero and provide a Debug ID for a sync attempt that triggers an error (or that stalls, if for some reason you're not getting a sync error icon)?
  • OK thanks Dan

  • Are you connecting through some sort of proxy server? You're getting a 307 response code, which isn't something we return. It might be something Amazon (our cloud storage provider) returns, but I don't think we've ever seen this before, so it's more likely something on your network.
  • Yes I'm connecting through a proxy (university).

I decided to try to reset from local data... I hope, It will fix my problem.

    I will report any issue.

    Thanks

Resetting data has nothing to do with your issue — which is about file syncing, not data syncing — and the reset options aren't meant to be used for troubleshooting.

This is almost certainly being caused by your proxy server.
  • I'd guess that the proxy is trying to redirect you to a login page, which won't work in Zotero Standalone. If you normally have to log in to your proxy server via a web browser (instead of a pop-up authentication dialog), you should use Zotero for Firefox instead.
  • Usually I don't have to login to my proxy.

Same problem with Zotero for firefox... endless syncing and files don't sync...

  • Are you able to try this not connecting through the proxy server? Because I suspect that will work.

If you can't, I can get a debug build that gives us a bit more information, but I suspect we could do a lot of debugging here and just find that this is an issue with the proxy server.
  • Hello Dan,

Unfortunately, I can't connect without any proxy on this computer.

    Thx

    Ken
  • I tried another debug in Zotero Standalone... D1932929808
    I don't know if it's usefull...
  • Can you grab the 4.0 Beta and generate another Debug ID with that? It might give us a bit more info on what's happening.
  • Thank you Dan.

Here is the Debug ID : D1450576581

The sync always seems to bug at 21% (67/629 files)...
  • I'm afraid that doesn't help.

We've never seen a 307 being returned, so I have to think that this is being caused by your proxy server, but I'm actually not clear why that's resulting in an error, since a 307 redirect should be handled automatically by the Mozilla network code — and it is in my testing. So the only other thing I can think of is that this is actually being caused by the local disk instead. If possible, can you try copying your Zotero data directory to your local hard drive, pointing Zotero at that, and syncing to there instead? (First make a note of your current data directory location so that you can revert it later if necessary, and also, for good measure, temporarily disable auto-sync in the Sync pane of the preferences, to avoid an accidental full sync in case you don't get it right on the first try.)

I'd recommend trying this in Standalone, which is somewhat less likely to be affected by security software. (You're also running an outdated version of Firefox.)
  • I've tried the local disk but this didn't fix the problem.

I decided to read the debug and I noticed that each time the sync was stopping at the same stage (21% : 67/627).

In the debug severall folders was present in the local storage but apparently not in the remote one "Remote file not found for item BNTXGXUS"

I decided to delete in Zotero standalone the pdf file stored in the folder BNTXGXUS.

Then I restart the sync and the sync went after 67/626... but stop again at 75/626 so I did the same procedure severall times. I deleted 19 files in Zotero and now the sync is ending : great !!!

But... I have an error message at the end of the sync (1702279111) and still some mysterious message in the Debug ID (the 307) and some folders that don't exist in my locale storage folder :
    6F9VSF4K
    8WIHS7GI
    FA9M3JM2
    FSN7PMKD

Here is the Debug ID D1331545154

    Thanks for your help

I'd discourage you from trying to troubleshoot yourself based on the debug output — you're deleting files at random that have nothing to do with the issue, which clearly still exists. (Also, the error is about downloading, not uploading, so I'm not sure why you're deleting files that don't exist remotely.)

In any case, I can't help you further on this until you try syncing this library without the proxy. If you can't do it on that computer, you can copy your data directory to a portable disk, connect it to another computer, point Zotero on that computer to the portable disk (or copy the contents to that computer), and try syncing with that. The data directory includes the entire sync state, so the sync would pick up at exactly the same spot. If you can reproduce this on another computer that's not connected via a proxy, I can look further. Otherwise, I have to assume that this issue — which, again, we've never seen before — is being caused by your proxy server.
  • Dear Dan,

    I've followed your advices :
    - copy my Zotero directory on a portable disk
    - use those data on another computer (without proxy connection)
    - sync

Everything was OK. The sync was ok and when I was adding new reference or new files, they were syncing.

Then I went the way back :
copy the modified Zotero directory (the one on my portable disk) on my first computer (the one with the proxy) and use this new folder for Zotero
I tried a first sync without any modicfication -> everything was OK
I tried a second sync after adding a reference and an attached file -> endless syncing

Here is the debug ID D1544386161

What do you think of this ?

    Thx for your help
  • If this worked on another network, there's clearly a problem with your proxied network connection. You might have better luck switching file syncing to "as needed" mode in the Sync pane of the Zotero prefs rather than trying to sync all files at sync time. That's about all I can suggest.
