Problem with error report

Good afternoon,

I have been using Zotero a lot since the last time Mr Stillman helped me (January 21st) without any problem, but today it just wouldn't stop having errors report and I can't save anything anymore. This is the same problem as before!

I don't understand: the last time Mr Stillman helped me we found out it was AddBlockPlus that interfered with Zotero. Of course, I have been disactivating it ever since I wanted to use Zotero, as well as most of my other add-on. But now it's now working anymore, and I am back where I began...

Mr Stillman said the last time that it might be a malware. I ran two complete scan of my PC by Microsoft security essential today and it found nothing.

The error report number is: 1607974059.
My last error report is here : https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/34437/problem-with-error-report/#Comment_180869

Would you happened to know what is the problem?
Thank you very much for your help
And have a great afternoon!
  • so what are you doing when you get that error report?
  • Sorry I responded late.
I was trying to save a scientific paper from the the website "Science".
  • we'd want you to run through these then:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues
and post the full information requested under 12
  • Actually, I wasn't trying to save the pdf, but to write the name of the author and the title of the paper. If I want to save a new paper inside my library or change anything from any paper I already saved, Zotero freezes and ask me to send an error report, and I can't close Zotero unless I restart Firefox.
I did it again, and here is the error report :
    2005195796

This is the exact same problem I had two weeks ago. Someone named Dan Stillman helped me understand that it was AddBlockPlus (a firefox add-on) that was messing up with Zotero. Since that day, I always dis-activated AddBlockPlus everytime I wanted to save something in Zotero. But today dis-activating AddBlockPlus (and ALL my others add-on) still couldn't make Zotero save anything. It just freezes and ask me to restart Firefox.

This is the thread were Mr Stillman helped me, if that can be any help.
    https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/34437/problem-with-error-report/#Comment_180869

If that can be any help, when I start Zotero I can already send an error report (it is in black and not in gray), here is the number : 627171986

    Thank you very much,
    and have a nice evening.
  • ad block plus is almost surely a red herring here - it's one of the most common Firefox add-ons and thousands of Zotero users have it installed (including myself) without any issues. You'll probably want to take another look at your security set-up. Maybe also re-install Firefox?
  • Good evening,

    You scare my a little...
I ran two times today Microsoft Security Essential just to be sure, and it found nothing...
    Couldn't it be anything else?

I am very bad with computers (and I am really sorry for those questions)but how can I "look at my security set-up"?
Also, how can I de-install Firefox, and what happen when I re-install it? Do I lose my data? Will my Zotero library be gone too? And the bookmarks?

Thank you very much Mr Smith,
    and have a nice evening.

I don't think reinstalling Firefox will help (it shouldn't change your settings). Resetting Firefox may help, but I would not suggest it yet.

Check your database integrity via Preferences -> Advanced -> Files and Folders. Let us know what it says.

Edit: but, as before, if that comes back positive, we'll just see what Dan can find in the report.
  • Good evening,
The database literally said it was "fine", if I translate from my native language, it says "no problem found".

Do you think I could have changed something/did something bad in the settings when I installed Zotero? Could I de-install it and install it again (and keep my library)?

I am really sorry to bother you...
    Have a nice evening.

It's unlikely to be any of your Zotero settings. Also, reinstalling Zotero will not change the settings. You can try installing Zotero Standalone (https://www.zotero.org/download/) and connect it to the same database. It's likely that this will let you work with your database properly and we can troubleshoot your issue in the meantime.

Edit: by "connect it to the same database" I don't mean Sync. When you start Standalone for the first time, it should ask you if you want it to share the profile directory with Zotero for Firefox. You should say yes.
  • I will install Zotero standalone right now. I will come back to you when it will be done.

    Thank you very much!
  • I installed it, but it seems to have the very same problem... Here is the error report : 212151944
  • In Zotero Standalone, go to Preferences -> Advanced -> Files and Folders, under Data Directory Location, select Use profile directory, then restart Zotero Standalone.

You should see an empty library. See if the issue persists at this point.

If it does not, go to Preferences -> Sync, enter your login credentials, uncheck "Sync automatically", "Sync attachment files in My Library...", and "Sync attachment files in group libraries". Close the preferences, then press the green circular arrow at the top right and let it finish syncing. Once it is done, see if the issue re-appears.

    We can continue from there.

I am so sorry to bother you so long...
I did the first part, and then restarted Zotero standalone. I had a blank library like you said. Then I tried to create a new document (an article from nature.com). I succeeded in writing the title, and the first name of the author before Zotero standalone froze.
Here is the error report : 453488691
  • I'll wait for Dan to take a look at the Error Report before proceeding with more troubleshooting.
  • Thank you very much!
I might go eat in the meantime...
I am really sorry for all the trouble. I don't understand why my computer does that!!

    Have a good evening
  • Same issue as before. If this was really with a completely new Zotero Standalone library — and not one you'd used before — then either something is very wrong on your system or there's a bug with a specific article you're trying to save. Can you provide the specific URL you're trying to save from?

Did you disable auto-sync in Standalone before switching it to use its own profile directory? Do so, click Show Data Directory, close Standalone, move the zotero.sqlite to your desktop temporarily (it's theoretically an empty database that you can delete but let's be safe), and then restart Standalone. You should see an empty library with just a Zotero Quick Start Guide. See if you can reproduce the error with that.
  • Good Morning Mr. Stillman, thank you for your help.

Yes, I saw it was the same issue as before, but it worked for about a month everytime I disabled AdBlockPlus just like you said to me...
This is the article I was trying to save. Unfortunately, the bug isn't in this article as it does the same thing for every article...
    http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v474/n7350/full/nature10106.html

Maybe it is how I am doing it ?
I open Zotero, then click on create a new document from this page (or create a new document => article), then I enter or copy paste the title and the authors, and it freezes when I try to enter the third author of the article : I can't click on the little "plus" to add a new author. Then, if I try to quit or change article, or change something from the article it freezes and ask me to restart Firefox... The odd part is I can't quit Zotero : if I try to quit with the red cross on the right there is a little pop up that says "there is a problem, please restart Firefox" and I do have to restart Firefox to have it go away...

Mr/Ms Aurimas told me to try to reproduce the bug report with Zotero stand alone and an empty library and I succeeded (see previous post).
Where can I find the data directory in Zotero Standalone please ? I couldn't find it.

    Thank you very much,
I am really sorry to bother you for so long...
    and Have a nice day!
  • To be clear, I never said Adblock Plus was the problem — I just suggested disabling all your non-Zotero extensions in case that helped.

You may actually be hitting a bug or conflict (technical note: maybe in the multi-creator parsing code?), but the good news is that you're definitely entering things the wrong way. On publication websites like Nature, you should almost never need to create items by hand. See Getting Stuff Into Your Library. You just need to click the address bar icon.
  • Good Morning!
The good news it that it clearly worked! I could save my paper in the library! (I tried with the one coupled to Firefox)
The bad news is that I didn't understand your technical note, even after googling it... Can there be a bug or a conflict in my computer even if I ran two scans of Microsoft security essential the last few days?

Out of curiosity: how can it work when I click it in the tool-bar but not when I want to create a new document...?

    Thank you so much!
  • That technical note wasn't for you. It'd be helpful for us if you could say the exact steps you're taking to reproduce the error, though.

  • Good evening Mr. Stillman.

I have been trying a few times tonight, but Zotero is working quite well (which makes me happy, my paper is due in two days so I can't complain it's working). Even though Zotero would not function at all Monday, now I can't make it to bug. This is the perfect Murphy's law.

    What I did all Monday:
1- Open Zotero from Firefox (Ctr+shift+Z)
2- Click on "create a new document from this page". (blue sheet with a little green plus) Zotero saves the name of the webpage.
3- Click on "Type of document" => make it "scientific journal"
4- Copy (Ctrl+C) from the website the full name of the first author.
5- Paste (Ctrl+V) it on "author" on Zotero.
6- Copy (Ctrl+C) the name of the second author.
7- Click on the little "+" to add an author on Zotero.
8- Paste the name (Ctr+V) on zotero.
9- Copy a third name (scientific papers usually have 5-15 authors)
10- Try to click on the little "+" in Zotero BUT it's grey and I can't click on it.
11- Try to click anywhere else in Zotero (in the middle panel, in the 'publication' field, anywhere) and the middle panel becomes grey and says : "An error has occurred. Please restart Firefox".

If I try to close or quit Zotero (by using the cross on the top right), a pop up comes on the screen saying "An error has occurred. Please restart Firefox". I now have to click "ok".
If I want Zotero out or to go away, I need to restart Firefox.

    I hope I could help...
Thank you really much for saving me and my paper. If you have a brain tumor, Alzheimer or Huntington, I come and save you!
    Have a very nice evening.
  • OK, I was able to reproduce this — it was triggered by some hidden whitespace around those author names on nature.com — and I've fixed it in the latest 4.0.18 beta. (It only happened when manually pasting in names, though, which should be pretty rare.) Thanks for helping us debug this.
If you have a brain tumor, Alzheimer or Huntington, I come and save you!
    Deal.
  • Oh my!
It really wasn't my computer the problem? This is a change.
I am quite happy I could help actually!

Thank you so much for taking this seriously,
(and explaining me about the tool-bar thing!)

    Have a WONDERFUL week!
    Deal
  • Sorry it took us so long to track this down. The way you were using Zotero is not typical and, frankly, I didn't realize the steps you were taking. I'm glad that everything worked out, but this case really underscores the importance of clearly explaining the steps you are performing that trigger the problem.

Make sure to point your Zotero Standalone back at the Zotero for Firefox data directory if you intend to continue using it, otherwise, you're likely to notice inconsistencies between the two libraries.
  • Thank you very much for pointing this, I didn't realise it. I shall point back Zotero standalone back to the library, thank you!

Don't worry about the time, I am the one thanking all of you for your time, your concern and your kindness!
    Have a wonderful evening!
