AccessPharmacy Translator Request

There are a number of online resources that I'm having trouble citing accurately. For example, when I try to create a webpage item from the resource (restricted access) at accesspharmacy.com I get a citation that looks like:

AccessPharmacy | HIV Protease Inhibitors. (n.d.). Retrieved November 12, 2013, from http://accesspharmacy.com/Content.aspx?searchStr=ritonavir&aid=16679827#16679859

It says nothing about the actual resource I was accessing (Goodman and Gilman's Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics), the authors, the page numbers, the chapter etc...I'd also like to be able to cite figures when I open them in a separate window.

There is a link within each topic/chapter that says "how to cite this chapter". When I click it, it spits out a bibliographic citation such as:

Flexner C. (2011). Chapter 59. Antiretroviral Agents and Treatment of HIV Infection. In B.A. Chabner, B.C. Knollmann (Eds), Goodman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, 12e. Retrieved November 12, 2013 from http://www.accesspharmacy.com/content.aspx?aID=16679561.

This is nice except that I don't think this is of any utility for import into a citation manager such as Zotero.

This same issue applies to sites like http://online.statref.com (also restricted access) which is basically an online professional bookshelf as well. I'm not sure this it's possible to create a translator for this type of site but it sure would be nice!! Thanks for your help!!
  • I don't have access to either and, I doubt anyone else writing translators does. You can try contact the respective providers of those databases and point them here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/dev/exposing_metadata
  • I don't have access either.

You can go to the web pages you want Zotero to save, take a screenshot and then save the page via right-click -> Save [Page] as... and select "Web Page, complete" for the type. ZIP both and upload to Dropbox or something similar and post the link here. We can take a look and tell you how feasible this will be.

Oh, make sure the screenshot covers the part of the page that says "how to cite this chapter"
  • I really appreciate that you guys responded so quickly. I'm sorry I didn't follow up sooner. aurimas, I've done what you asked and here's the link:

    https://app.box.com/s/17upirj9mdkyf0yi8dnp

I really appreciate your help with this issue!!
  • that looks very doable, what's the URL of that page as you see it?

The citation it spits out is:

    AMA Citation
Ghany M, Hoofnagle JH. Chapter 301. Approach to the Patient with Liver Disease. In: Longo DL, Fauci AS, Kasper DL, Hauser SL, Jameson J, Loscalzo J. eds. Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 18e. New York: McGraw-Hill; 2012. http://accesspharmacy.mhmedical.com/content.aspx?bookid=331&Sectionid=40727096. Accessed February 14, 2014.

    APA Citation
Ghany M, Hoofnagle J.H. (2012). Chapter 301. Approach to the Patient with Liver Disease. In Longo D.L., Fauci A.S., Kasper D.L., Hauser S.L., Jameson J, Loscalzo J (Eds), Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 18e. Retrieved February 14, 2014 from http://accesspharmacy.mhmedical.com/content.aspx?bookid=331&Sectionid=40727096.
  • ...from the get citation button that is
  • so when you click on the get citation button on that page and then click "bibtex" as the option. What do you get? (just open with a text editor and paste here).
  • author = {Ghany M and Hoofnagle JH},
title = {CHapter 301. approach to the patient with liver disease},
book = {Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 18e},
    year = {2012},
    eprint = {}
    }
  • I feared that. That's a problem. If you look at the citation above, it has the editors, but they're nowhere in the citation data (I checked the other data formats from the page you put up on dropbox, just wanted to make sure you're seeing the same thing while actually connected to the database).
We can hack something together, but it's not going to get you very good citations, so not sure if it's worth it.
  • Darn. If I were to send a message to the people in control there what should I tell them to make your job easier/make your assistance unnecessary?

I've emailed them before and they stated that they were working on a solution and this is apparently the best they could do!

So you see that there is export for Zotero implemented already, right? It's in RIS format and it looks like this for the citation above:

    It looks like this:
    TY - BOOK
T1 - CHapter 301: Approach to the patient with liver disease
AU - Ghany M, Hoofnagle JH
    Y1 - 2012
BO - Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 18e
N2 - A diagnosis of liver disease usually can be made accurately by a careful history, physical examination, and application of a few laboratory tests. In some circumstances, radiologic examinations are helpful or, indeed, diagnostic. Liver biopsy is considered the criterion standard in evaluation of liver disease but is now needed less for diagnosis than for grading and staging of disease. This chapter provides an introduction to diagnosis and management of liver disease, briefly reviewing the structure and function of the liver; the major clinical manifestations of liver disease; and the use of clinical history, physical examination, laboratory tests, imaging studies, and liver biopsy.
    SN -
    ER -

    But it should ideally be:

    TY - CHAP
T1 - Chapter 301. approach to the patient with liver disease
    AU - Ghany, M
    AU - Hoofnagle, JH
    A2 - Longo, D.L.
    A2 - Fauci, A.S.
    A2 - Kasper, D.L.
    A2 - Hauser, S.L.
    A2 - Jameson, J
    A2 - Loscalzo, J
    PY - 2012
    T2 - Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine
    ET - 18
AB - A diagnosis of liver disease usually can be made accurately by a careful history, physical examination, and application of a few laboratory tests.
    SN - 978-0071748896
    ER -

The most important part here are the A2, and once those are implemented I'd be happy to make this work more seemlessly with Zotero, but really their RIS should be fixed more generally. Let me know what they say.
