Moved files to Dropbox, but storage still full

I have moved my zotero folder to Dropbox and linked Zotero to that folder. When synching I still get that my personal storage (300MB) is full. Can I savely "Purge Storage"? Will it still be maintained at Dropbox?
  • don't put your Zotero folder into Dropbox. It is not supported and known to cause database corruption.
  • any other suggestions? 300MB is not sufficient.
  • use webDAV, pay for Zotero File Storage, use ZotFile and relative linked files with Dropbox, https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/29322/howto-linked-attachments-dropbox-zotero-40/, or symlink the storage folder (but not the data folder) to Dropbox https://zotpad.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/103395-what-is-a-symbolic-link-and-why-should-i-use-one-w
  • Also, if you do the latter, you will still get that message about full storage until you disable file sync under Preferences -> Sync.
  • OK, thanks I will look into this.

So, regarding the "Purge Storage thing"? Can I do that already? Or do I still need it?
  • Purge Storage will clear your online storage, but if you have not yet set up your Zotero with one of the above options, it will just re-upload everything. And if you have set up Zotero with one of the above, then the only reason to Purge Storage is if you need it for a group library.
  • ok, I've succeeded in setting up Zotero with WebDAV to Box. I understood from all the comments and documentation that this was a better option than Dropbox.

If this is done, I can Purge the storage, so it can be used for my group library. Thanks for all the help!
  • One more quick question: What happens to the URL setting in the Advanced tab > Files and Folders? Now it still refers to Dropbox (my previous option). Do I put this back to my local profile folder?
  • Which URL setting? Base directory? Or Data Directory Location?
  • Data Directory Location
  • yes, you want to move that back to your profile folder. You will then likely also have to manually move the contents of that folder (i.e. in your file browser).
  • I'll manually copy the Dropbox folder back over the original folder, and then set the Data Direction Location url also back to the original path.
