why to install standalone

Hi,

what are the advantages of standalone? what are it's applications? Is it better than addon in facilities?
  • The differences are small and mostly apply when you want to use a browser different than Firefox. There's a comparison table here:
    http://zotero-manual.github.io/zotero-manual/installing-zotero
  • The major advantage for me is psychological--not having it in my browser means I can stay off the Internet when I am writing.
  • thanks for your reply,

in the mentioned link there is an advantage for addon and is "Allows you to print and customize Zotero reports", what does it mean? how can I use this tool?
  • Reports are documented here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/reports
you can now also print them from Standalone.
You can only use the online report cleaner tool by Jason with Firefox, but I believe you should be able to use Emiliano's report customizer ( https://github.com/friflaj/zotero-report-customizer ) with both, so this difference is mostly gone.
  • How do you use Emiliano's customizer? I installed the xpi, but when I open the generator, I don't see any text boxes to check or uncheck the fields. I have OSX Mavericks.
  • after installing you should have an option "Report Customizer" in the Zotero gears menu.
  • Haha. I realize now that my explanation made me sound like a fool. I found the "Report Customizer" in the gears menu. The issue I'm having is that within the report box, there is no way for me to select/deselect fields. Here is a screenshot of what I mean:

I see no way to turn fields on or off.

    Thanks for your help.
  • uh - so that changed, and I'm not sure for the better - but:
You can click on the little triangle next to each item type and that will expand a checkbox with fields to enable/disable
  • So it sounds like there has been a change. Perhaps I should try installing an older version. If you look at the second picture, you'll notice that one of the triangles is expanded, but there are no enable/disable options. When I click a field, it just highlights the field, that's pretty much all it does.
  • I'd troubleshoot this with Emiliano - open an issue at the github page.
  • Will do. Thanks.
