Drag and drop items into Outlook

When using Gmail's web interface or any other webmail application, dragging items into the compose window cues the attachment function and the zotero item attachments are attached to the email.

Similar functionality doesn't occur with Microsoft Outlook. When I drag an item to a message in Outlook, the bibliography entry is displayed (the same functionality as occurs when dragging the item into Word). If I drag the attachment directly, the local path is inserted as a link.

Is there any possibility of the functionality with Outlook being changed to work like it does with webmail applications?
  • I don't have Outlook installed, so I can't test this, but can you drag-drop files from Explorer into Outlook and have them attached?

I also can't replicate the functionality of dragging and dropping a Zotero _item_ (not PDF attachment) into Gmail and having the PDF attachment attached.
  • 1) Yes, you can drag files from Explorer to outlook and have them attach. Also, you can drag attachments from Zotero to Outlook and have them copy there.

    2) Either the behavior has changed or I was mistaken. Zotero _items_ no longer attach for me either. However, dragging Zotero attachments does attach the file to the email.

    3) The behavior in Outlook when dragging Zotero attachments is to insert a link to the local file location.
  • I'm having the same problem. Zotero attachments drag & drop into Windows Explorer, but not into Outlook 2013 (Outlook pastes a link to the file instead of the file itself).
  • This is the same behavior as occurs with Word. It is the general Microsoft Office behavior. There really isn't anything Zotero can do to change it, unfortunately. The reason it works for Gmail and other webmail programs is that they have specified that attachment is how to hand local file links. Resolving this involves addressing the behavior of Outlook, not Zotero.
