Over 1000 conflicting copies - help! #14775320

I am working with a group, and earlier today (after successfully syncing hundreds of files over the course of the last week), I got a message telling me that syncing had stopped due to 1100 conflicted copies. I can't figure out what happened. Please help!

(Error #14775320)

Thank you.
  • Stab in the dark (Dan will have to take a look at the Error Report), but is your system clock set correctly?
  • Are the conflicts for regular items, notes, or attachment files? What is the nature of the conflicts? Can you tell a difference between the different items? If you provide a Debug ID for a sync attempt through the resolution of the first few conflicts, that may be helpful. (You can then cancel.)
  • Hi Dan,

Thank you for your help with this.

These are citation files with notes, and most of them have PDFs attached to them. I can't tell a difference between the items.

    Here's the Debug ID: D213716263.
  • I think what Dan is asking is when you go to resolve the conflicts, what kind of differences are there between local and remote copies? (E.g. different date modified) He may be able to tell from the Debug report, not sure.
  • Aha. Let me sync again and check.
  • I just clicked through a few of the conflicts, and the citations seem to have the same dates, but the PDFs have different dates (for both of the attachments that I looked at, there were three conflicted copies shown, one of which had an earlier date and two of which had the same date).

for both of the attachments that I looked at, there were three conflicted copies shown, one of which had an earlier date and two of which had the same date
The conflict resolution screen displays two items: local (the copy on your computer) and remote (the copy coming in from the zotero.org server). The third "item" on the very right is the item you decide to keep, which could be local, remote, or a combination of fields from both.

Having said that, I have noticed a similar issue before but on a much smaller scale. I never figured out what caused it. Are you using WebDAV?

Edit: nvm the WebDAV question. I see you are using groups, which means no (though you could be using it for personal library)
  • I'm not sure what WebDav is -- is that the built-in pane at the bottom of Firefox? If so, then yes. I'm also using Standalone.
  • These all appear to be legitimate differences in items in your group. This generally happens if you make changes to a lot of items on one computer but they're modified by someone else — or by you on another computer — before you sync.

We'll be switching to a completely new sync architecture in the next major version of Zotero that should help avoid these sorts of problems, but in the meantime the easiest way to recover from this, short of resolving all the conflicts manually, is to do a Restore from Zotero Server and overwrite all your local changes. You should also try to make sure everyone in the group has auto-sync enabled so that no one is able to make significant changes without their being synced to the server.
  • Hi Dan,

You're right -- I hadn't realized that our project administrators were making changes to the files. I passed this info along to them for future reference.

Thank you again for your help.
