IMPORTING FROM PERSONAL FILES

I am getting the following message when I try to import a document from my files:

'No translator could be found for the given file'.

I am new to Zotero so can anyone suggest what action is needed?

    Import is for citation metadata from standard bibliographic file formats. If you want to import a document, use "Store copy of file..."

    Right-click on an item, or click on the paperclick icon while you have an item selected. You can also store a copy of a file by selecting that option at the bottom of the green plus-sign menu.
