Zotero standalone re-made itself

Hi, I've had zotero standalone with the chrome connector and winword plug-in for several months now, but this morning when I tried to open Zotero, there was an error-box (I clicked "ok" without too much thought) and the once Zotero standalone opened after retrying to start it, there was nothing in the library.
After reading a lot of these forum posts, I tracked down my 'roaming' and zotero folders, which have the modified dates going back several months, but the sqlite file is brand new. *Also, Word and Chrome both still have zotero functionality* Does anyone have advice to help me either find the old library or somehow restore it in? Thanks.
  • How many zotero.sqlite.* (e.g. zotero.sqlite.bak) files do you see? What are their actual file names, modified dates, and file sizes?
  • I only see the one "zotero.sqlite" with yesterday as the date in my zotero folder, if i go back a folder to my profile folder I see: extensions.sqlite, extensions.sqlite-journal, formhistory.sqlite all with 9/26/2013 date, permissions.sqlite 5/15/2013, places.sqlite 11/12/2013 and webappsstore.sqlite 11/12/2013
  • the sqlites at a higher level don't matter, but you really only have a single such file in your zotero folder? Note that the relevant files would probably not end on sqlite but be something like zotero.sqlite.bak1
    zotero.sqlite.bak2
It's possible that your main Zotero folder was in a different location - try to search on your harddisk for zotero.sqlite - though depending on your OS you may have to adjust the settings to find anything

Lastly - did you ever sync Zotero or do you have a recent back-up of your harddisk? Either would allow you to restore your Zotero library.
  • Yea, there really is just the 1 file in the zotero folder, which I agree is odd. There is absolutely nothing else in there besides a few folders: "translators" and such.

So I ran a search for zotero.sqlite and couldn't find any other instances. I'm on Windows7, would I need to change some settings to find if I did in fact have my zotero stored elsewhere originally?

So I definitely thought I had synced my standalone, but I must be mis-remembering because my e-mail wasn't recognized at all by the site. --- I'm using a fairly small SSD, so I run an online backup every week, I can try to see if there is a zotero.sqlite*** file in there somewhere. Any other suggestions while I look around for those?
  • Your best bet is to find an older version of the zotero.sqlite file. It's practically impossible for Zotero to just lose it. Any chance you had your Zotero data directory inside Dropbox or something similar?
